Delhi hotel...Connaught place or Paharganj area

My girlfriend and I, are looking for a mid range ($40-$60 USD) hotel in Delhi that will alow us to ship stuff to them throughout our 5 week backpacking travel in india and store it for us (this is a must). We will stay in the hotel the first night we ariveiun india and then the at the last 3 days of our trip. I have read many reviews of different hotles and some poeple say to stay in Connaught place while I see that many people stay in Paharganj area. What is the difference, what is more preferable.

We are looking for nice comfy coozy hotel with steller staff, good location, and preferably terraces or balconies! As this will be the first place we stay in india after a 2day plane ride, we were looking for somthing comfortable and that would help us ease into indian/new delhi life without being overwhelmed.

I am looking at (connaught) Hotel Bleu, Central Court Hotel, Hotel Fifty Five
(Paharganj) Hotel Star View, Majnu-ka-Tilla, Hotel Relax, Prince Polonia.
Money is an issue the cheaper the better but we can if needed spend up to 40-60 USD for the night.

This is paharganj for you: a backpakers paradise for it is closest to the railway station and to CP as well...open almost 24 hours and full of small hotels/eating joints...the small hotel fellows will arrange almost anything needed and yes at reasonable price.

CP is a cleaner and a planned place, with the Metro construction activity going on I don't think you will find it clean by any standards.

IMO : CP is better while you settle down (thaught costlier) and after you know your ways in India you can very well shift to paharganj

Most hotels in CP/Pharganj will receive stuff for you, while you are away if you plan to come back to stay etc.

Caution : Don't try to judge any place in India by your standards and don't try to find western luxauries while you are here...

I spent a fair amount of time in Delhi on my recent trip to India (my first time) and stayed in a few different neighborhoods. When we first flew in we spent the first two nights in the Defence Colony at the Ahuja Residency ( www.ahujaresidency.com/guest_house.htm) The Defence Colony is NOT a central location (it's in the south of Delhi), but it was a good place for us to start and have a slow entry into Delhi life. We also have some friends who live there, so that was part of the reason why we stayed in this somewhat fancy neighborhood. It's a nice guesthouse and they have a large communal balcony and are right near a little park. It's a residential area, so there are no touts for miles.

The guest house costs about 1800 Rps/night and was much too expensive for us, so we quickly moved to a hotel in CP called Hotel Blue. I'm not sure if it's the same as the "Hotel Bleu" you mentioned in your post, but I hope not. The woman who worked there was sweet, but otherwise it was terrible. Not clean and a rip off. I stayed in 100 rupee rooms that were nicer than the one we had there.

And if you do end up staying in or visiting the Def Col, go to Sagar South Indian Restaurant in the Def Col Market. It's great and so cheap! Try the dahi vada....mmmm....

Also, staying in the south of Delhi puts you close to Qutb Minar and Humayun's Tomb, which were two of my favorite sites.

thanks for the reply...I think that we will be staying in Paraganj because of the location to the sites and the train station. So its just trying to find a hotel there that will fit our needs and wants. Unfortunately we will try to only use one hotle in Delhi so that during our 5 weeks travel there we can send stuff back to the hotel to be stored and safely waiting us on our arival back to delhi. We will deffenately try the restraunts in south delhi...i'm sure it will be a nice change from the busy side of the city, and an interesting and different perspective of Delhi that most tourist don't get. Thanks and i'll let you know how things go!

If anyone has any recommendations for hotles in Paraganj area that would be fabulous!!

PaharGanj is a really crowded place. Won't recommend if it's your first time. CP is out of question for this budget. The best option I can think of is KarolBagh. It's just as close to the railway station. It's less crowded and you'll get better/cleaner hotels there, within your budget.
