Yes ! the CHOKI DHANI is a great place to stay, you will certainly enjoy it as the whole ambience of that place is like a village and you will see the daily cultural activities going on there its a typical RAJASTHANI Village and the food was awesome...needless to say it RAJASTHANI one.
cheers |

The restaurant Chokhi Dhani is a popular place with an ethnic touch. It hosts a number of cultural activities in the evening and is highly recommended, specially if you are not visiting the interiors of Rajasthan.

In spite of warnings that it was strictly for tourists, we went to Chokhi for dinner and it was a very surreal experience. Imagine being in a faux Rajasthani village while in Rhajasthan, India! But it was good cheezy fun and the food was great (and it just kept coming!). -Greg

Why don't you just go to Chowki Dhani for dinner and stay at Jas Vilas?

I went there in Nov. of '02. It was a lot of fun. I didn't stay there but rather was staying at the ManSingh in Jaipur. I went there with my mom (born and raised in Lucknow). We had a blast. Great way to spend an evening. Very interesting!

Choki Dahni food alert
We just returned from a long weekend in Jaipur. Stayed at the Umaid Bhagwan, which we would recommend. It's in a quiet part of town, very lovely, and the owners are very attentive.
On our second night, we decided to visit Choki Dahni. Choki Dahni is a 5 star resort that is comprised of cottage in the Rajestani style, a Disney-like village & bazaar and a restaurant. The village is trooped by real locals that danced, sang, read palms, and entertained. There were elephant and camel rides and overall it was great fun. At about 10:30 we made our way t the restaurant. (The place is open to midnight.) The reaturant is al fresco. We lined up to get a plate and the head server demanded a 40 rupee fee + 60 rupees for a bottle of water. I complained because the fee at the entrance was for "meal included". But the guy knew he had an exclusive market and simply retorted that this is "a 5 star resort" sire and that's the price. He refused to give me a receipt and I noticed him pocketing the Rs. 200. That was our first warning. The all-vegetarian food was spread out buffet-style. There were lots of nice dishes and some cold macaroni, potato and bean salads. The main dishes were in warming trays and I noticed a few were no longer hot, but we were famished and it was dark ( romantically lit by low lamps and torches). There was live music and the atmosphere was enchanting. A few hours later, back at the hotel, the dinner hit like a time-bomb and I got very sick. The food was good, but had been sitting in hot trays that were no longer hot. Be forewarned that you can get bad food, even at a five-star resort. |

begreen9, I also find that strange - I have been there several times, enjoying great rajasthani food sitting on the floor. But I think there are several restaurants, maybe you have been in the hotel part.

Since Chokhi Dhani is a major attraction in Jaipur, I checked with the Management and they confirmed that:
Food is served on banana leaves (or the like) and not plates Seating is on the ground No western style dishes are served there - the food is typically Rajasthani So maybe Begreen9 ate at one of the other two restaurants in the same complex. |

Wow, that's odd. It was dark and we only saw one restaurant, by following the signs from the village area. This was Sat. night. It was located opposite to the reception building office. Yes, it did seem to be in a hotel area. there were several cottages. Our food was definitely Indian. I'm not expert enough to know if it was Rahjestani. The macaroni salad seemed to be a tourist concession. Food was served buffet style in restaurant, stainless warmers. The obnoxious server made it clear that we were eating at a 5-star resort, so we had no indications of any alterantives. Bummer if we missed out on the good stuff. There weren't any obvious indications of any alternatives.
If this is the resort food vs. something offered by Choki Dahni, my apologies. There is no indication that they and the hotel cottages are a separate facility. My pity goes to the other people staying at the resort who were eating there along with us and their families. |
