That kind of money would see you quite nicely bedded-down in one of the regional capitals or a small town (such as Hampi or Khajuraho), but I really think you'll be pushing to find a room that you'd be willing to walk into for that kind of price in Mumbai. I'm sure they exist, but I am equally sure you'd take one look and then go looking for the nearest Holiday Inn! My advice is to double your budget, add a bit for good luck, and then go looking through this site. Although I can no longer remember any of them by name, I recall seeing several hotels which were favourably commented on for around 500 or 600 rupees, mainly around the Colaba area; I do recall a poster named Lyndy telling us about a real "find" in Mumbai, and, although that post was about eighteen months ago, you may still be able to turn it up with a search. Or maybe Lyndy will read this and tell us about her choice! I am afraid the only place I can recommend from personal experience is the Benazeer; we thought it was great value in expensive Mumbai, and I have often sung its praises on this site, but even a cheap single there would probably be nearly three times your proposed budget. As the poster above said, good luck!

Ashish, I went looking for Lyndy's old post for you, and although I didn't find the original post, I did find a reply I wrote, long ago, which actually referred to Lyndy's post, and, what's more, named the hotel. Here is a cut-and-paste: "In that case, you're looking at the Hotel Lawrence. I have never actually seen this place, but another poster (Lyndy -- you should be able to find her comments by searching above) was enthusiastic over this hotel, down towards (but not quite in) the Colaba area, for which she paid 500 rupees per night. I wish I had found it -- we ended up paying 950 rupees and thought we were getting a great deal! However, I can't recall whether the Lawrence gives you your own bath, etc.... Lyndy's posts will reveal all." Maybe you will be able to find a few other references to this hotel... now that I'm all "fired up", I think I'll go looking for some, also. After all, we plan to go back to Mumbai in 2008, so it's best to be prepared! (However, I still think I'll go back to the Benazeer!)

Have topped two posts for you... one just one or two below this one, and another which turned up in the Mumbai sub-section. Several recommendations in these... including contact numbers. I think your problem is solved, but I didn't see anyone talking about 250 or 300 rupees (one mention of 400). So my advice about doubling your budget still stands. Have a great time!
