Camping
I realise that with rock-bottom hotel prices, irritating (and potentially harmful) creatures about, and the extra weight in your rucksack, camping is generally overlooked as a means of getting a nights sleep in India. However, as an avid camper, I was wondering if there is a camping culture in rural India, if not any camp sites? I know it's doubtful, but the thought of camping with the locals under the Indian sky is one I couldn't ignore.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any info. |

Stick with the guest houses & hotels Conor,,,,,,,,,,,
It's really not feasable to camp in mainstream India, Pitching a tent etc you'd be the centre of attention & you would be pestered all night,,,,,,,, Ok yes if you're travelling through someplace & need to sleep by all means do it in close proximity to a temple or an out of the way place just under the stars with a blanket, you'd be fine, or an alternative if you like to be under the stars choose a guesthouse rooftop. Saying that though if you are into trekking in the mountains perhaps that would be a different thing altogether & more acceptable........ |

Yeah, that's pretty much what I expected, and the thought of lugging a tent around on my back for three months is not one that appeals - however, renting a tent for treks, etc. sounds feasible, and I know that above a certain height you are spared many of the insects that might make camping at a lower elevation less comfortable.... Anyone ever taken a tent along on treks?

India doesn't have a tenting / hitch hiking culture. May be some level of 'tent camping' is happening in some specific trekking locations.
Otherwise I've seen tents at road sides only by the poor migrant laborers doing construction/road work. And sure the circus companies ![]() Your camping things will be a big liability in India (just like a wet mud soacked shoe).Travel 'lean' in India ![]()

and camping is what we do At Rangers in Puri
The travel scenario in India is much adopted from the backpacers way of traveling in India. So many area Like HP.Chatisgarh,Gangtok, and leh ,A whol lot camping going on. And the inspirations are from the backpackers.
Its too easy in India than any where to carry on tenting as long as you have the right outddor attitude. And in out skirts Konark &Puri we do camping on long lonely beaches and estuaries. happy camping. sanjay |
