Has anybody found a good budget hotel in Mumbai besides the Salvation Army Hostel?

Yes, the Benazeer, in the Fort area. I thought this was a more convenient place to stay than the tourist-preferred Colaba area, which is right down the bottom end of town. I found the Benazeer -- mid-way between Churchgate and Victoria Stations, right near Citibank and American Express, within walking distance of the markets in one direction and Gateway and Colaba in the other -- through this forum..... a local put me onto it. It's not exactly an oil painting, but it is extremely good value; we got the best room in the house (the only one with a full-width view of the square outside), air-conditioned and with its own bath, for 950 rupees a double..... expensive for India, but cheap for Mumbai. We stayed there the first night of our holiday, before embarking on a five-week odyssey which took us from Jaisalmer to Fort Cochin, planning to return to Mumbai at the end of this trip and stay somewhere better as a last-night splurge. However, when we arrived back in town, we decided that we didn't want anything better, that the good old Benazeer was just what we needed... so we turned up at around 7 a.m. and asked if we could leave our bags, and they allowed us to check into the same room for the whole day, that night, and the following day until 2 p.m., for the same low price of 950 rupees. We told them we'd recommend them, and we're keeping our promise. Nice people, good value, great location.

In 2003 I stayed in the Salvation and then moved to the Carlton Hotel which is around the corner from the salvation army. It's right behind the Taj Intercontental Hotel. It's on the 2nd. floor with a nice big balcony overlooking a street. Theres many tables where you can just sit and peoplewatch.Just look for the Carlton Hotel sign on the street behind the Taj Hotel and walk up to the 2nd. floor. It cost me 500 rupees. They wanted 600, but I asked 500 and they said o.k.
I had cable t.v. and a refrigerator in my room. Plus 2 big double doors that opened up to a view of the Taj Hotel across the street! They also have cheaper rooms with no windows. The only drawback was a shared toilet. But I will stay there again if I go back as having a t.v. and frig more than make up for a toilet for that price in Mumbai. |
