Best Place to stay in Udaipur????

What in your opinion is the best place to stay in Udaipur? It can be a budget or midrange hotel, guest house, or haveli.

I'm looking for a place with some personality, good food, charm, and maybe on the lake if all my stars align. Not all those have to be present, but you get the idea. I would prefer some western comforts like toilets and hot water....but will be fine if not present.

I will be there in December and would appreciate your suggestions/opinions. If you have any suggestions on what to do in Udaipur that would be great.

hi there,

i suggest you to stay in some hotel at fateh sagar or pichola lake side, coz after 7 years these lakes are full now, you will enjoy your stay a lot there, Hotel Sarovar at lake pichola is one of the good choice.

Wonder View is good. Ask for corner room with a view facing City Palace. Go to eat to Amber restaurant close. Chieftravels can do all your travel arrangements (opposite Lake Pichola Hotel)

We stayed at the Jagat Niwas Hotel this january and I can recommend it. Directly at the lake, very comfortable and clean, good rooftop restaurant. Rooms around 2000 RS.

Jagat Niwas

Every evening at sunset, a monkey gang descends from the fort, jumping over the roofs of the city to the tree besides the hotel for sleeping. This sketch shows thier route

We stayed in the Udai Kothi, http://www.udaikothi.com/ - great place with a nice rooftop restaurant overlooking the lake.

Lake Pichola Palace with a lakeside view of course is a reasonable alternative to the Lake Palace..

We stayed at the Udai Kothi the first year it opened. We were probably one of their first guests and the price at that time was only 700 RS. It was beautiful and well worth the cost then. I see that the price has tripled since then and there are probably more services available. At night we were the only guests at the rooftop dining area, complete with a full band and entertainment, playing just for us. It was a great experience and a lovely place to stay with a charm that many large upscale hotels do not have. I am not sure that I would stay for the 3000 per night they are asking now,but it may be cheaper to book in person, and if so, it is a wonderful place.

nice hotel in Udaipur

Hola Viajera - I stayed in a very beautiful little hotel in Udaipur: The Panorama Guest House in Hanuman Ghat tel Nus. 0294 2431027 or 0294 2431023 and 0294 2431024 (just ask the taxi driver)- I had Room #6. Hot water and all that. The hotel was spotless and beautiful, very near the lake. Plus the owner, Mr. Krishna was young and extremely pleasant. Nice restaurant up on the terrace. They can play Octopussy (which was filmed in one of the palaces of Udiapur which you can visit) You can also get together with a group (gather downstairs) and go up by taxi to visit a palace at sun down. Wow!
Across from the lake every night in a palace you can watch a free dance performance. You should make a donation at the end though as it is all they get. If you want more info, respond to this and I will send you a photo of my hotel room. btw the cost : 250 Rupies - yes, that's right about $6. US !
buena suerte

NOT the Hotel Sarovar. Udai Kothi is a great choice!

We stayed at the Hotel Sarovar in Dec 04. It is a dump! The place is in need of total renovation. They have a noisy trio upstairs in the bar who play the worst loud music until midnight! The food was really good there but the staff are run off their feet and the management are rude & stupid. BTW the car they organised for our airport trip was driven by a scam artist who picked up his mate along the way and proceeded to eves drop on everything we said. They were planning to rob us, I reckon! We yelled at them and told the driver to get rid of his mate. He finally deposited his mate elsewhere! Don't stay at this hotel. They do not deserve your business.

Udai Kothi is a lovely hotel. We looked at it and we're planning to move as it's over the street from Sarovar, however we had already prepaid so decided to grin & bear the Sarovar!

Udai Kothi is a fine choice & if you are lucky, they may have a vacancy. They are always fully booked! Good luck!

Udai Kothi is on the opposite side of the road to the lakefront hotels like Hotel Sarovar. i.e. just over the road from Lake Picchola.

Lal Ghat Guesthouse is a wonderful place to stay. Cheap and clean and best of all it has loads of charm. The owners are a friendly (but not too friendly) family. The restaurant is great and overlooks the lake.

one of the best hotels I stayed in in India.

Although not yet been to Udaipur, I'm booked into Kankarwa Haveli in a few weeks time. Right on the lakefront close to the Palace - with double lake-facing room with attached bathroom for 1650 R, plus 8% tax. You might like to check out the website at www.indiaheritagehotels.com and search for the hotel. They will also arrange rail-station pickup for 150R if you want.
email: kankarwahaveli@hotmail.com (and Janardan is likely to get back to you promptly - at least I had no problems!!) Happy travels where-ever you stay.
