Oops, sorry I misunderstood. Thought it was a free pick-up. We got a free pick up at the airport in Delhi from the guest house we stayed at & being the middle of the night, it was really nice not to have think about anything but changing some money at a bank inside before we exited.

Unless it's free or the same as a prepaid taxi, just take the prepaid taxi. I reread your posts alderhill & didn't see you say how much they were going to charge you.

i guess in that case, i'll tell them to forget it. i'm fine with a taxi really. $20 is still a lot for me. i'm more-or-less on a budget and more-or-less backpacking.

they must have assumed i wanted a pickup because i said my flight arrived in the early morning. I actually leave in the afternoon of Jan. 9th but with stopovers and flight time, it'll be just before midnight on the 11th when I arrive! i just want a place to collapse at 2 in the morning without hassle. i'm already paying for a day i won't really be there for...

I flew into Cairo at 3 am about a year ago, that was madness. Ended up paying $25 american for a taxi ride that should've been a few dollars. what a ride that was... I hope my experiences with aggressive touts, taxi drivers and tourist trinket shops in Egypt has prepared me a bit...

There are alot of similarities. And it definitely will help but it all has a slightly different spin in India. Not sure I can explain, maybe someone else who has experienced both can.

It won't be an unpleasant taxi ride in the middle of the night when the roads are not very busy.

I can say that a taxi ride in Cairo was a seriously white-knuckle experience that despite India's reputation as being sometimes hair-raising, Cairo still stands out to me as even worse.

The only place I can recall being more freaked-out than Cairo was on the Grand Trunk (GT) highway in Pakistan where I came close to screaming & crying with lorries passing lorries passing cars on both sides of the 2 lane road, with people & goats & dogs also walking along side. Seemed there was always 3 vehicles coming straight at you or you going straight at them.
