Aurangabad in mid November - can I find hotel?
I am leaving for India in two days. I had been coordinating with a travel agency in Delhi via a third party to get me room in Aurangabad, but the process has stalled.
Question: In one week, I will arrive in Aurangabad in the morning via overnight train from Mumbai. I want to see Ellora that day and check out of a hotel the next day and head to Ajanta and go north from there (I have another train booked but I am WL1 status right now). *** Can I find a decent, clean and not too costly (less than Rs 1500) hotel within short order upon my arrival in Aurangabad? All I have is my LP guide book . The hotel listing here on Indiamike is rather limited on Aurangabad. Or should I go to a travel agent in Mumbai the day or two before I take the train? Please help!! |

There are a lot of Hotels in Aurangabad so I'm confident you'll find something by just turning up!!
I had an AC room with TV for 550rps nothing fancy but comfortable enough, I'll try and find the address for you but don't worry Aurangabad, like so many places is oversubcribed with hotels, finding a bed should be easy enough!!!! Great place Aurangabad loads of great food on offer and friendly locals!! |

Agreed. Aurangabad has tons of hotels, many more than are in a guidebook. The cheapie ones are by the train station; the mid-level and upscale ones are spread out. A few years ago I stayed at the Ashok, which is in your price range (at least it was then).

How can I find a decent hotel without the rickshaw and taxi touts?
Should I leave my luggage at the train station and head out on foot? |

Ha a little story, I grabbed a rickshaw in Aurangebad, as we were tired and couldn't be bothered lugging out kit around in the heat!!
Our Chosen Hotel wasn't up to much for the price, so we hopped back in the rickshaw and asked him if he had any ideas for around 350. He took us to a place he assured us was within our price range, we went in without the driver and he wanted 450 for the room and wouldn't budge. So we went back out and explained to the rickshaw driver, not good enough the driver leapt out and after an animated conversation with the hotelier cam back out and told us the room was ours for 350!! (we later ungraded to a better room and still got a decent discount ) Not all rickshaw/taxi drivers are rip off artists and many know where the best deals for your personal budget are located!! I've done this quite a few times, the trick is not to let the driver talk to the hotel, initially let him sit in the cab and do your own talking. Taxi drivers are a great source of info on hotels and the like!! |

I would suggest that you get an auto-rick from the railway station to the bus station - only about 2km and head north up Station Road. Cost about 50/-. Cross the busy road and there are lots of guest houses which vary in price and quality very close to hand and plenty of good dhabas for easing your hunger pangs. Buses go frequently to Ellora (about every half hour) and make sure you stop at Daulatabad en route. From that same bus stand, you can get buses to Ajanta and onward to Jalgaon. |
