Anyone tried Home Exchange w/India ?
Namaste all,Has anybody tried exchanging homes with Indian citizens during holidays ? I've visited many professional home exchange websites - all those Google could find. And I'm at a bit of a dead end. - I find very few Indian members on those website. So either home exchange is not popular in India, or there are websites, possibly targeted at an Indian audience, that I haven't found. Any suggestions ? My flat is small, suitable for one, max. 2 people. Most Indian members of home exchange websites are large families with huge flats or houses, seeking same. - So, I'm thinking exchanging with college students. Is it a practice for Indian college students to spend a few months abroad for their studies ? And how likely is it that they would own their own place, as opposed to renting or staying with parents? And if the college thing sounds right to you, then what's my next step : contact local university student boards / housing offices ? - Any other suggestions on how (and whether)to proceed ? Thanks for sharing your experience. (P.S.: I'm not saying what locations I'm considering, as I'd rather not be swamped by PMs from questionable members who'd happen to have just what I'm looking for. I'm confident that all you unquestionable members will understand and feel free to PM me anytime.) |

Very kind of you, Aditya.
This is a truly generous offer. To tell you the truth, the reason I'm attracted to the "home exchange" formula, as opposed to the couch-surfing formula, is the perspective to have an apartment all to myself. I am an old bear, and my working habits make me a questionable guest - I wake up at 3:00 AM to write... But if that solution doesn't materialize, I'll be sure to contact you. In which case I promise I'll amend my wake-up time. Thanks again. |

Thank you all for your generous offers and hospitality.
But I should probably make this clear. This thread is NOT about finding a place to stay while I'm travelling in India. I will NOT reply to offers, however sincere and generous, of staying at one's home. It is a serious practical thread that aims at finding information on something called Home Exchange. The ultimate goal is to exchange my apartment with an Indian family's apartment for a period of several weeks or months, within a clear legal frame. As in, there's no-one else in the apartment when I'm there. Much as I cherish Indian hospitality, if you are not a member of a Home Exchange site, there is no need for you to reply to this post. Thank you. P.S. : And thank you, Captain, my gut feeling is I'm glad you edited that post before I saw it... |
