Aiswarya Hotel in Ernakulam (Kerala)

Stayed at Aiswarya in Ernakalum March 2005. Trying to save rupees for other parts of my trip, I opted for a 400-rupee single room on the third floor. A cricket team was also staying the hotel, but my room was extremely quiet. I would hardly call this room representative of a "borderline-luxury class" hotel. It was a basic budget room with attached bath and with TV and telephone in the room. There were stains on the walls, the towels and bed linens had been washed yet did not seem particularly clean, and there seemed to be bedbugs and other critters lodging with me -- I found their sloughed body shells on the sheets and floor in the morning. (I didn't have a mosquito net, so I had to sleep with with a full-length sleeve shirt on and with my pants legs tucked into my socks.) Plus, the desk clerk I met on arriving was not the most welcoming person I have ever encountered.

That said, I was very impressed that the cleaning staff, when they changed the bed, did not take a single dollar or rupee from my wallet, which I had unintentionally left along with my passport in the bed one morning. Those hardworking women restored my faith in humanity. (I had gotten ripped off by some jerks in Mumbai a few days earlier.)

I stayed at the Durbar Residency, near Jos Junction, in Ernakulam. It was great. Very clean single room, fan-cooled, private bathroom with hot water, cable TV, phone, room service for Rs.275 (plus some tax). It's only a short walk to Ernakulam Junction train station, too. Definitely the best value-for-money hotel I stayed in during my three months in India.

...I really should put an entry in the Hotels section for this one!

Oh! Indeed you should. From the website it looks really impressive. In fact I'm surprised that a hotel in that price range has a decent website.
