It's a bit lower than mid-price (our double room cost 450 rupees), but Hotel Sheela is the one to go to. I am sure you will find lots of references to it both on this forum and on ThornTree.

The great thing about the Sheela -- apart from its pleasant ambience and lush grounds which you can stroll around in -- is that it's no more than 50 metres from the entrance to the Taj Mahal. You can quite easily ensure that you are first in line at the ticket booth, and that means that you can see the monument without sharing your view with the 59784536482347 people who will be swarming all over it like ants by 8:30. The Taj is a great place to be when the sun is just creeping up over the horizon and the tourist coaches haven't even left their depots. Just rise early -- around 5:30 -- at the Sheela, forget breakfast until AFTER you visit the Taj, be at the ticket office about 5:50, and enter the Taj at 6 a.m. Magic!

When you've finished your visit, at around 8 a.m., and decide to head back to the Sheela for breakfast, just take a look at the queue at the ticket office (and the coaches in the car park), and you'll be glad you found the Sheela!

Non-Recommendation in Agra - Hotel Taj Kheema!

A few weeks ago we stayed at the Hotel Taj Kheema, very close to Hotel Sheela. in the environmental zone 300 m from the Taj Majal eastern gate. The place is run by the tourist board with a large garden mound with very good views of the Taj Mahal. But the pluses stop there. The ensuite air-conditioned room (900Rp) had water stains on the ceiling, electical wiring strung around the room, painted out windows, shabby curtains, no towels and dirty linen on the bed! NOT recommended.

Also, the 'mound' is not really available to guests as it is used for tour lunches and night function (organised by caterers) the actual restaurant is rather shabby with no Taj views. During our stay the mound had 150 for lunch and over 200 for dinner with band etc. We were kept awake for hours as the oudoor stage was dismantled and caterers cleaned up!

Hope you find a better place!

Hi , we stayed at a place called "tourist rest house" you can get a pre paid taxi there....basic room, clean with ensuite, but what made it was the courtyard garden which allowed you to get some peace and quiet...which is always a bonus in India
