chandigarh: kwality regency hotel, in sector 22.
small but very nice - mid price range i suppose, much like a hotel room i would expect to find here in oz. very clean, comfortable. we shared a double room (huge bed), own bathroom with hot water, aircon and ceiling fans. restaurant and room service. think that i paid about RS1000 per night each, not sure if that fits into your price range. contact details were in the 2000 LP.

agra - very similar at hotel atithi, fatephur rd. bland, but clean, quiet and airconditioned. paid around RS800 each to share a double room.

Hotel Pearl Palace in Jaipur which is the first one recommended in LP 2005 is very good and has a roof terrace restaurant, not the best food but ok and there are plenty of restaurants nearby!

think we paid about rs800 for room which had a/c and hot showers!

Well that all depends on whether they will be full or not when you get there. All comes down to what kind of traveller you prefer to be, either organised so that you know exactly where you'll be on any given day or just wing it and see where you end up.

If its your first visit to India then you might like to start off organised so you don't get scammed by taxi drivers after their commission from hotels and then wing it as you go along from there once you get a hold on the place!

We do both seemingly on alternate trips, I kinda prefer to wing it though!

Off to Pondycherry this weekend, have no real idea of how we are getting there apart from our flight to Chennai and no idea where we are staying!

Cheers
Malc

old manali - i preferred the DRAGON Guest house. its centrally located in old manali, and has fantastic views frm the verandas.price wise it may be around 600-800 during season time depending upon the room u take.

In Agra: Hotel Sheela. It's so close to the Taj that it's practically inside. The reason it's so quiet is that autorickshaws are not allowed within around 200 metres of the Taj, and the Sheela is much closer than that... you can walk to the ticket office in less than a minute.

I agree with Hotel Dalziel in Shimla. Also, Hotel Classic next door is as good but a bit cheaper. I paid rs.350 for a double there. Both are great hotels that are about a 5 minute walk from the main part of The Mall. In Manali, I loved Raj Palace in Model Town. It's right in the middle of the action and I had a wrap around balcony for my room at rs.250! These prices were from Oct. of last year.

well, you should give an idea about your meaning of "not too expensive" and also about "cool".
In Bundi (but it was out of high season) we didn't find any ohter tourist, so if you mean a "party place" I really have no idea...
Also, since it's not a very touristic place, I found hotels were more basic than in touristic places.

I didn't stay in the places I'm suggesting, I only had a look, and they seemed OK.

Also, if you reach Bundi by train, be sure you arrange a pick up at the station. It was the only place where we didn't find any rikhsaw or anything at the station.

ciao
