Smile Accommodation and Travel DehraDun

Can anyone recommend a good family hotel in Dehra Dun? Approx Rs800 - 1000.

What is the best (not necessarily the cheapest) way to get to Dehra Dun?from Delhi - Bus or Train? Are the buses express and without videos?

I lived in Dehra Dun many years ago and wish to visit there with my family.
We would also like to take a day trip to Mussouri? What is the best way a bus or a private taxi - How much?
Many thanks.

The beautiful Dehradun

Well,
The best hotel in Dehradun i found is Madhuban hotel at Rajpur Road.
The shadabti express from delhi will be the most comfortable train. There are luxury coach buses and taxi too from Delhi. But i suggest the train journey would be better. Mussouri is located 28 km by road from Dehradun. If u like to do the trekking to from Dehradun to Mussouri there it will take 6 hours.
Start early morning from Dehradun and reach Mussouri by lunch time. Have a hearty meal from 'Rice Bowl'.
There are taxi services also from Dehradun to Mussouri. The road to Mussouri is very narrow.
It is a beautiful place. Plan to stay at Mussouri at least for a day. It is streat to our eyes to watch the snow capped mountains.
enjoy

There are daytime & overnight options if you’re travelling by train.

Train 4041 departs from (old) Delhi station daily at 22:15 and gets to Dehradun at 08:00 the following morning. (1A, 2A, FC, SL.)

The fastest train would be the Shatabdi Express, this is train number 2017, it departs New Delhi station daily at 06:55 and gets to Dehradun at 12:40. (EC, CC.)

Train 2055 departs New Delhi (Except Sundays) at 15:30 and gets to Dehradun at 21:10. (CC)

Train 4309 (Th, F.)/ 9265 (Sa.)/ 4317 (SU, M.) departs New Delhi at 12:00 and gets to Dehradun at 19:00. (2A, SL.)

Ticket prices from New Delhi to Dehradun.

1A = Rs 1223
EC = Rs 915
2A = Rs 649
FC = Rs 471
CC = Rs 465
SL = Rs 160

As you are in a group of 4, First Class non air conditioned (FC) would be a good option on the overnight train, you will all be in your own compartment (4 berths), once you show your tickets, you can just close & lock the compartment door and go to sleep.

homely place..

I discovered this hotel by chance a few years ago and its an excellent place to stay: The 'Shri krishna guest house' on rajpur road. its run by this nice couple renee and jayant and its exact opposite the Sakya monastery. Very clean and 5 minutes from rajpur village from where you could take a bus or just walk up to mussorie or walk down. I lived in ddun too about 20 years ago. its far busier now and i recommend you check this place out if you are looking for clean air and good ol dehra feeling.
their tel nos. is 0135-2734009,0135-3108614. and teir web site is i think...
www.krishnaguesthouse.tripod.c om/
and their addresse is 186/3 rajpur road dehradun.
cheers and good luck...

Hotel Madhuban is nice, but very expensive, at least $50 USD/night.

As for getting to Mussoorie...I can't handle buses on those winding mountain roads. We always hired a taxi. There is also a share taxi at the bus stand, I believe. For our private taxi we paid less than 1000 rupees to leave in the morning, spend the day, and return at night.

The best restaurant in DehraDun, in my opinion, is Kumar Vegetarian on rajpur road. Just fabulous, rich, reasonable south indian and punjabi food.

You will be amazed at the changes in Dehra Dun I lived in Vasant Vihar for a year, and came back two years later shocked at how much bigger, most congested, but also more fun the city became.

oooh I think you are thinking of the Kumar's. It's about 4 shops down from Kumar Vegetarian (Kumar's seem to have a monopoly, don't they? There is also Kumar's sweet shop). Anyway, Kumar's is also FABULOUS and has the one and a half floor and neon sign. They make the most fantastic sizzler!

mmm, sizzler. One of those odd Indian delicacy that I couldn't recreate if I tried.

Yeah thats The ONE! And I think the Sweets shop was like next to it! AMAZING FOOD! A bit upmarket but I guess it has to be like that in a place like Dheradune. I miss INDIA!

Dehra Dun & Mussorie

Many thanks to everyone who replied.
I expect to be shocked on my visit there. It has been more than 40 years since I lived there. So it is very much a visit of nostalgia.
