Zanskar and Suraj Tal ???

Hi fellow freaks

Me and a friend of mine are planning to hit Zanskar on the 3rd of october i hope Rohtang pass is open at that point in time. we are starting from Darcha and will return from kargyak due to time constraints.

Ok we are looking at few things that we arent sure of and expenses for these things.

1) Tents on hire ( if we can get sleeping bag, how much that cost us )
2) Porter's who can cook during the trek and guide us as well (How much would that cost).
3) How dangerous can the altitude sickness be since we shall cross shingo la pass and might camp there and are the villager's approachable if we need help ??
4) Since we are going to baralacha pass we will be on a bike is there a way we can park our bike at darcha, would that be safe ??

Please need info and suggestions on this note asap since time is running out.

We are thinking of hiring a bullet from Manali along with tents, rest has been thought for keylong that is kerosene and stove.

Boom

Don't bother yourself with this small questions becaue once you ar in Manali to rent your Bike (old Manali) you will be overwhelmed by the infos on the route etc. You can keep your bike at Darcha in a shop - no problem. But how are you going to carry your cook. But once again don't bother the Bike renting shops (they are also travel agency) they will arrange eveything for you. Teh route is generally open in the beginning of October. Adn this year not much snowing chances yet so early. So try to keep yourself fit for the route. One suggestion to drink WATER at least 3 -4 litres a day to keep yourself from dehydration which will help you to acclimatize adn avoid most of the disease. try to carry with you a water purifier drop / tablets. Use it in the places when you can't find Mineral water.

EL ES DEE here is the info that you wanted to know:

1) You can get the tents etc. from Delhi and Manali; if you are going with a porter then I guess it might be best to hire tents from Manali as well from the tour/trek operator where you will be getting porters from. In case you want to rent them from Delhi then check out the price list of Carbin India located in Okhla http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=185

2) I guess its best if you arrange for that from Manali it self from the numerous trek/tour operators.

3) AMS can be quite dangerous if one is not careful, my advice is to carry at least 3-4liters of water with you at all time and drink it regularly. Last year I ran out of water before Baralacha La and because of that I got a nasty taste of AMS. Beside this you can mix glucose in water and drink it every 30-45minutes and it would help a lot. Beside this don’t forget to carry Diamox, here is a comprehensive article on AMS http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117

4) Parking the bike at Darcha can be a bit of an issue, I guess it would be better to park it in a village rather then in Darcha. If you are getting the porter from Manali then make sure you tell them about your requirement for a safe hideaway for your bikes while your trekking, I am sure they will be able to find a safe parking spot. Else get in touch with the army folks there, they might be able to help you out.

hey thanks for the info mates, really needed your inputs on this front.

Can you please highlight on the porter part, can i get any from darcha ?? cause bringing them from manali would be something of a hassle plus its going to be charged extra we have a very tight budget for this killer trek.

Thanks yogesh and guidebaba.

cheers
