What to bring for gifts.

This summer we will go to Zanskar for the second time. We will also visit a family near Phuktal Gompa, we got to know on a previous visit. We want to bring some gifts for mother, father and children.
Does anybody has an idea what to bring?

Thx, Adri

After Zanskar we will spend some weeks in Ladakh. Besides visiting some gompa's we are thinking of a visit, maybe trekking, to Pangong Tso.

Following is my idea

1) Lot of handicraft items are available in leh itself. It would be suitable for most of the guys.

2) Also some memorablia (I think i spelled it correct) are available at the Khardong La Pass. There is a small shop selling this type of stuff along with some other things.

If you'll get to Zanskar quickly and can protect it from the heat, a handful of chocolate bars will be a good start! I suspect your friends will like melk better than puur. A box of cocoa powder would be a nice gift, too, or a jar of Nutella. Some nice young or medium-aged cheese.

They will also like "typical Dutch" souvenirs: calendars with scenes of the Netherlands (especially the tulip fields and windmills), maybe little Delftware earrings for the women in the family.

Great tips WWU. I'm sure something not of their immediate region, or from your own indeed, would be appreciated.

Last year I took framed photos of the family (taken year previously) and toys for the kids - knucklebones, yoyo, bubble blowing stuff, a popball (by far the most popular object) and a notebook and silver/gold ink pens for the the girl of the family. I tried to stick to toys that could be shared, wouldn't make noise (don't need an Indian mother getting mad at me), didn't need batteries and stimulated the kids' creativity. It all went down really well.

For the Dad, maybe a Swiss Army Knife would be cool. The mum, something she can feel glamorous in - maybe a beautiful shawl or gorgeous earrings.

Also, some postcards of your own village is always a winner. We take photos of what we see over there, it's nice for them to have photos of what you see over here too.

Hi

Being a kid from Ladakh I used to get gifts from visitors from Western land. And would love it what ever comes our way. No matter whatever it is, its always something to be cherished.

Chocolates are always welcome "Not big bars but small wraps, single serving" with instruction to mother to give them few at a time.
Clothes like warm pullover, T-shirts, jackets.
Comic books, crayons, note books, pen etc
Lego, Puzzles.

I agree with BabeInTheWoods idea of Swiss knife.
And a warm sleeveless Jacket for the mum.
