Tso Moriri vs Pangong Tso

Planning to visit Ladakh in mid July 2007 with a few friends for 9 nights. Plan to cover Leh, Nubra Valley. I am a little confused on whether to do Tso Moriri or Pangong Tso. Could you pls suggest. Or should I do both and drop Nubra Valley?

If you cannot do both lakes, then drop Tso-Morriri or you can do it with one day extra while on your return journey to Manali.

Do not drop Nubra.

Thanks for your reply Bhaswaran.
Since I have 9 full days - can I look at doing both the lakes? Or would that be an overkill? Are they similar? And how long does it take to get to each of these places? Do I have to go back to Leh everytime?

from Leh:

Day 1: Local sight-seeing

Day 2-3: Nubra Valley

Day 4: Pangong Tso

Day4-5: Tso-Morriri, and you can also return to Sarchu (back to Manali) after seeing this (so you can keep this on the last day)

in addition, you can also visit other sites like Da village (Aryans) and proceed towards Kargil and return via Kashmir (Srinagar).

Thumbs up

I know about the Manali-Leh bus service by Himachal Tourism.

Frankly, I do not know about any bus service between Srinagar and Leh. Anybody who knows may kindly inform about this.

But there is shared jeep service from Srinagar to Kargil. From there, there must be some service to Leh. You will halt one night at Kargil. And do not forget to see the Tiger Hill, the battle over which turned the tide of the Kargil War.

I have taken the Leh-Manali route by government bus. It was priced at 525 rupees in 2005 not including the night halt cost at Keylong. A bit tiring but beautiful landscapes.

My trek in Rupsu vally was wanderful and exiting. Visited Tso Kar, but left Tsomoriri for the next time. That's because the Rupsu VAlley trek was strainuous and one of my friends was not able to cope with the strain.

What we did was treked until Debring summer pasture land - Leh Manali highway is 5 kelometres from there. Camped there for two nights. Went upto Cho Kar and cameback.

Next day hitch hiked by a Himachal Pradesh Taxi. (In fact the Himachal Pradesh Taxis return empty from Leh as the Taxy unions in Leh denies them passenger - so, on the way you can ride them - and bargain also.)

To Manali it costed us Rs 500/- per head! And the route is of course mind blowing - especially Pang, Sarachu and barlachala..

Already planning for another trel there next year.

I did Pangong-Tso & Mubra Valley in May 2006 as part of Srinagar to Leh to Manali tour. Can't compare Tso-Morori as I didnt go there, as most people recommended Pangong-Tso. See the blog page below for some details & pics:
