Tso Moriri or /and Pangang Tso
Hi..
we will be driving from Delhi to Leh in July, but before we reach Leh we will make a detour to Tso Moriri and then on to Pangang Tso.. Should we include both the places or just Tso Moriri... Also any good hotels in Manali ..: Thanks a lot... |

detour
Dear Jaybel,
I think it would be better if you just inlude Tsomoriri coz firstly its on the way from manali to leh and secondly it has great similarities to Pang gong which has more of army problems. Also remember that the manali taxis just take u to tsomoriri Cheers Ankit sunhimalaya@yahoo.com |

Pangong Lake is lovely - although it is a long day out.
I would thoroughly recommend it though. I've always found the Indian army polite, friendly and welcoming when I've encountered them in the Himalaya; Pangong Lake was no exception. If we'd had time they would taken us as far towards the Chinese border as you can go!

I read that a permit is necessary to visit Tso Moriri and that you get this permit in Leh.
So, is it possible to visit Tso Moriri going on the way from Manali to Leh? |

I would skip both during the drive to Leh. Tso Moriri is at 4.600m (1000m higher than Leh) and you have to spend the night at this altitude therefore if you are not acclimatized it is wise to spend some time in Leh before you go to Tso Moriri. If AMS strikes there is no short time descent from Tso Moriri. You can visit both on the way out - first Pagong then Tso Moriri via Indus valley&Mahe Bridge, going out via Tso Kar (another lake with abundant wildlife).

Maybe they were drunk and in 'your my best pal' mode when I last encountered them!
![]() I think Kolobar is absolutely spot on. For Pangong Lake you must cross the 3rd highest road on the planet - at 5599m I believe. Unless you are well acclimatised that sort of altitude can put you in real danger very quickly. I don't know if you can get permits from Manali as I got mine in Leh. |

I agree with ROB, Never had any problem with army guys ever, except that now a day I see army drivers up there a bit pushy and reckless then yesteryears, maybe it’s just me catching up on age!! Overall they are nice to be with for a while, little rest, a chai and some gossip. Around leh I don’t recall ever having to bother about staying in hotel as long there is army post around. I agree this may not be best way to plan your day but sometime I don’t mind arriving at first check post with proper permit but way beyond time to enter, they gripe and whine for a while, look at your sheepish face and then invite you in for night, and you are treated with juiciest fresh chicken, rum tote, and a very warm bed. But don’t forget to send them the pictures you have apertured with them.
For all the inner line permits you need to be in Leh or more importantly ‘em permits are issued from the Distt Head Quarters under which that inner line area falls. So you have to plan your visit accordingly that you visit the Distt HQ first then anywhere else. |

Permit Tsomoriri
Is your travel agent from Ladakh? If you want to go to Tsomoriri from Manali - it is also possible to send him all of your details from the passport and he can send the permit with someone to Manali! Better ask your travel agent - many things are possible in India!
