Talking Trekking in December to Ladakh(Zanskar Frozen Lake).

Hi Friends,
Am planning a trek to Zanskar Valley for the Chaddar Trek between December 20th to 1st January. Is it feasible in any sense? If so please advise as to how to go about it.
If not any other worthwhile option to go for.

Note: I am travelling alone. Couldnt manage anyone to come along.

Requirement: A little funny but i want snow and frost. :-)
A memorable trek.
Budget: No constraints.

I've trekked in south India but not much in the Northern region. Am totally naive and would depend on your worth information given to me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi. I would advise not to try trek alone for chadar ice trek. It is a long 20 day trek to and fro from Leh and there are some points which require crossing over semi-frozen lakes by forming a bridge. Chadar trek depends on the amount of snowfall during the year. The last three years has seen successful treks here due to snowfall beginning from oct itself. But prior to that there have been mishaps too. Also alone many not be able to carry 75 litres of sack + rescue equipment.

If there is no limit on the budget then hire a trek agency. Mid Jan - end Feb is a good time for chadar trek.

Ratul - Look out in this forum for Sandeep Khandelwal. I saw a note on some thread from sandeep planning to go for chadar in jan 2008. sandeep is a professional expert and runs his own agency out of manali. If you are alone best idea write to him and join that gang. All the best and do write your travelogue with some good pics.

Try Chopta to Chandrashila trek (via Dugal Bitta) or Yamunotri to Dodital. there will be lots of snow.

Send a message via Yahoo to abhi182
The Zanskar hasnt frozen over as yet and is expected to freeze by 1st to 2nd week of Jan
If you havent trekked int he Himalayas, start with smething relatively simpler...
The Chadar trek is one of the most difficult treks anywhere

abhi182 is correct and had compiled very well. It is not only expensive to fly in and out from LEH but also having a guided trek over frozen river.

You should know that you will be walking min. in aprox - 20 degree celcius which can further go down if you had bad spell of weather.

I think you should try something simple which also helps you in understanding the mountain.

Alone? For the Chaddar Trek?
I hope you have done your homework.

Good luck!

I believe the OP meant that he will be travelling North to Leh alone, not that he intended to do the trek alone. I know we have seen some pretty dumb ideas on here, but I'm sure he's not that stupid!

It is a very challenging trek; though I'm no expert, I do have experience of snow and icy conditions and I certainly don't consider myself capable of that trek.

Been on the Marka Valley trek mid August - was snowing then in Nimaling. Did it alone with 4 ponies and a guide/cook. 9 days on the trail - memorable!

Would love to do the Chaddar Trek someday but it is more of endurance and skill, leaving you no time to enjoy yourself.
