taxi rates in Leh

I am planning a visit in 3 weeks from now. As the cost is quite high i would like to take shared taxi for some places (Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley) - Do they run shared taxis or do I have to talk to travel operators and find people who can share the cab with me.

That's a terrific resource, a tour de force, aloxingh! Thanks so much for these images, they will be very useful to study without the pesky guys at the taxi stand...and give us an idea how the GHS and trek co's are charging relative to the real price.

Interesting, we got a Qualis from Leh to Kargil back in 2004 for the cost of Rs4000, so the price has risen rather a small amount - to be Rs4700 now.

My only grievance now is that you cannot get one (buddhist) driver to take you all the way to Padum - I gather the old 'drop off at Kargil' is still in place, so the Kargil taxi union can get their piece of the action; which makes it hard not to stay in Kargil, not the most attractive of propositions for travellers. Back then it cost us Rs9000 for a 2 day run to Padum - too much in my view.

Me and my wife are planning a trip to Leh in August.. Does anyone have latest information on Union rates.. The hotel guy is charging us 9000 for a trip to Pangong (1 day onward and 1 day return journey - Innova or Xylo) - does that sound like a reasonable figure ???

What I have found that contacting drivers directly is good since the drivers would give you 10% discount.
But travel agencies do not give discount, at least not to us.

So first do local sightseeing. This way, you get to know a driver.
Then you could ask this driver for a longer trip with the discounted price.
We unfortunately did the reverse, and got discounts for the small trips around Leh. The driver provided discount even without asking.
