Anilbhai, 400 will give you an adequate deal.... dont worry. just go there and check out 3 to 4 places before finalizing any one.

My "trekker types" stay in 100 per day dormitory places... coz they want to spend more on the trek itself...

Try to see Tso Morari and Pangong Tso Lakes... they are out of this world.

definitely head for the oriental guesthouse in changspa - probably the best, friendliest budget accommodation in leh.

I have also got reports of oriental, I went there and it was booked but i have already switched two hotels one siddharth..nothing to rave about and the other rainbow on karzoo( the food sucked big time) the former at 500 and later at 400, but nearly all the good guest houses in karzoo and market and stupa road but changspa has some budget rooms which may
appeal to a lot of bag packers. It has some restaurants catering
a lot of cuisines of all round the world.

Hence it is advisable to book in advance atleast one place for 2 nights to rest and the next day u can look around to suit your taste.

sir it aint easy to get a room

hi,

yeah I checked fort road, a bit expensive and changspa have few but
without attached toilets..Leh is flooded with hippie tourist and alike .. although it is fun to interact with the free spirited guys.. it is just difficult to bargain on anything and prices are being jacked on excrusions and hotels, taxis, clothes u name it.

I am not disuading but it is really not the right time, my honest opinion.

Hi,

Since you are in Leh you could be of great help to us.
I'm reaching Leh on 20th from Manali by road.
Can you check out the Phone Nos of Shanti and Oriental and a few other nice places so we can book before we reach.
I want to stay in a good place with Parking for a Car.
My budget is flexible from 500 to 1500

Thnks

Hi Anil,

Am just back from my Leh trip and was going thru ur post.

Dont know if you're still looking for acco... but you can check out the following :

Semnet Guest House on Old Leh Road - Old family type guest house of the Dorje's - good place - they have 2 rooms with attached toilets and i think 2 more with common toilets. Room Rates in the range of 100-300. Disadvantage - no parking. has to be done on the main road.

Hotel Khayul again on Old Leh road - has ample parking space and decent enough rooms with running hot and cold water. Run by the Ahmed's - Meet Basheer Ahmed. Room rates again not more than 300 for a double bed room.

We had also stayed in a hotel in Changspa - however, dont remember the name. But i would still prefer Old Leh road - near to the central market and yet aloof.

Hope that helps.

We r reaching Leh by jeep (will hire from manali) on 15th.. we r five people.. i guess we can take two rooms one with an extra bed..
how big is the town.. i stay in place A or place B.. how much does it make a difference ? secondly if i call up at the given numbers of Hotel Shanti or Oriental or as a matter of fact any hotel i think i will be charged more than the case if i go there ... any views on this.. how much can we bargain in leh ?

hi

the difference is if u book the room in advance for two days atleast u save the trouble of looking around for a room, when u reach late in the evening or in dark.. as u dont have hotel agents at any spot to show u around..the solution is to book for a simple double bed rooms in your budget from 200-500 for two days as u get the rest too.. if ams hits u.

After u settle in u can look around for a place for your choice and yeah being on fort road, changspa, karzoo u are more closer to restaurants and other essential places and where the action is and as further away is sometimes a pain if u dont have your vehicle to navigate as the taxi guys charge min 50 to 100 based on your neg for distances of hardly few mins.

As a matter of precaution as the sewage and water supply system is archaic and under strain from influx of tourist in june july and aug, hence use mineral water or refill your bottles at dozma laundry for Rs. 7 per litre ( an local co op which sources water from glaciers, and treated in pesticide free procedures)

For laundry u could use dozma which charge rs. 60 for 1 kilo of clothes( again they use bio degradable detergent and the affluents are discharged in desets far away from inhabitation)

And food u could go to lamayaru( cheap and good indian food) and other restaurants on fort road, market road, changspa offer various world cuisines and even wood oven pizzas, mexican, israeli, italian ,tibetan food.

Aluya at the main market is run by a local co op, over hyped but pathetic service and food too.

If u are looking an upmarket restaurant to treat your self lavishly there is one near sun and sand hotel on changspa run by a sardar.

Instead of using the STD and ISD services to reach to folks back on market road, the tel com shops rip u with higher pulse it is better to walk down a bit to old bus stand near siachen where mostly locals stay and have veg and other market, there u have proper pulse accounting for calls.
