Question Stuck in Leh! (I should have listened to you...)

So, about two weeks ago, we were advised to reverse our itinerary for the trip, and leave Leh till the end...
We didn't do it...

So now, we are stuck here, feeling sick and not really enjoying ourselves... not to mention the insanely high prices we are asked to pay here + and it's not even the season yet!!!

So we are thinking of leaving... question is + how we do it...
Apparently the government did not open the roads yet, but there are a few jeeps doing the way from Leh to Manali, weäve heard that this is actually quite safe, since the drivers are more careful and drive slowly, what do you think? Another thing is that we heard Rishikesh will be too hot in the beginning of June, is this true? Coz we were thinking going to Manali, Parvati Vally and then Rishikesh... Am i doing the route wrong again?

Your kind answers and advice will be very appreciated...

If the altitude is not a problem give Leh a chance. The areas off the main market are cheaper. I remember Hotel Khayul was only 200 rupees a day and not too bad.

if you have just arrived just give Leh a chance it is quite beautiful once you get used to the Altitude.

I hope someone lese will be able to advice you better about the Leh Manali route, I have done it but in June when the roads were open.

Hi Tal,
There is a list of hotels/guesthouses which u can find under the toursit tab of www.leh.nic.in, u can find info abt lot of budget guest houses there. Can you plz tell as hows is the scene there rt now...i m planning to visit leh arnd 25th may, any idea will it be ok ay that time...also as I'll be coming alone will there be enough tourists with whom i can share a taxi and visit places like pangong lake and nubra valley?
and if you are thinking of returning you may try visiting kasol(manali - bhuntar - kasol). Its on the way to manikaran which is a vry famous place. Apart from that you can also try visiting dharamshala.

Tal, you take the Srinagar route, this is open for general transportation. This road generally opens before the Manali-Leh.

i hope you guys manage your way out soon.

God bless

Are you feeling literally sick , i.e. from the altitude ?How long have you spent in Leh ? Most experience relief somewhere around the third night , when the body makes changes to the breathing regulation. You might also find it easier to spend a night or two in Saspol : very nice location , two (I believe) guest houses , nothing more ... and four hundred meters lower than Leh.

The Manali-Leh road is not open all the way yet , only between Manali and Keylong .

The road to Srinagar is open since April 22.

Please pass on some of the stuff the people saying this are smoking , sounds like potent stuff. I could use it next time the jeep driver starts short cutting the serpentines in the Gatta Loops , downhill. With the buses you get careful drivers in less than safe buses , with the jeeps you get the opposite.

Hey taltul,
I am really so sorry to sure that you feeling sick over there; Hope things get better for you soon;
But,can you please tell us,whether that some light vehicles are doing the Leh-Manali trip already? I thought,it's still not possible, but, you're the first to talk differently; So,do you have any authentic information about the same? Please do post it,if possible,as I am sure many out here are willing to get the latest from there.

I got a message from Leh today ,from a guy who rode in from Srinagar, saying the opposite : "I am currently in Leh waiting for the pass to Manali to open."

That accords with my experience. The one exception was a likable bus driver that attempted a mean imitation of James Dean. He was cool! Always liked it when I caught his bus to Pune. I did the same imitation when I 2 wheeled it that route. I don't even remember what we hit on his last trip, probably a lorry..
