If you want to go by bus, just want to tell you, be sure to drink plenty of water. When I did it, it was bumpy, dusty and high altitude symptoms. Water, water, water.

Well, you can go Srinagar Leh Highway and come back via Manali - Leh Highway. This way you will be acclimatized and less prone to mountain sickness. You wil find JKSRTC buses at Srinagar Bus Stand near Lal Chowk which costs about Rs 500 – Rs 600 for Standard bus and Rs 600 – Rs 700 for semi-deluxe types. Some private buses also run and they charge about 700-800.

On Manali - Leh Highway, HPTDC and HRTC buses run. HPTDC is a delux bus service and charge about 2000 per seat with night stay at Keylong with meals included. The ticket between Manali – Keylong costs about Rs 100 – 125 and then Keylong – Leh it costs about Rs 450 – 550, in HRTC buses

After reaching Leh, first you should do Nubra Valley and then Pangong Tso so that body is acclimatized when you reach Pangong. Trickiest part is to find buses inside Leh in timely manner. So , there you need to find travel partners to share the taxi cost. You can do this here at IM as well. Also, there are flyers all around Leh mian market and Changspa road used to club together and share taxi costs. You can catch your partners there as well for local tours.

High fluid intake does not protect against AMS , and binging on water can give exactly the same symtoms as severe altitude sickness : headaches , nausea , vomiting ... and worse.

If you take the bus you have the most important protection against AMS for free : one nights in Kargil , slightly higher than the "altitude" you have encountered on airplanes. A near ideal spot for a first acclimatisation night. If you want to play it really safe , spend your next night in Alchi , four hundred meters lower than Leh. Well worth visiting in it´s own right if you have any cultural interest in ladakh, one of three sites in the world where Kashmiri Buddhist art has survived.

i hope leh to manali road will be open by july, not sure weather by mid july as we are planning to return mumbai from leh by manali road, so would plan our trip accordingly..
