So much to see , so little time

Hi All,

I m planning a trip to Leh this September and have only got 16 days to spend. I was thinking of taking a flight in/out of Leh instead of the Manali-Leh road. It saves me time but I was just wondering:

1) what will I be missing out in the Manali-Leh bus trip?

2) How bad is mountain sickness for tourists who fly into Leh direct ?

Hope to get some suggestions

if you have 16 days only for the leh tour then you have enough time for manali Leh road journey.....

anyway
1. cant answer this one as I also did the trip by flight. I definitely missed something but I was very very happy with what I did not miss.... thats pretty fantastic too.

2. you have to take complete rest on the first day and have very light program(like leh town site seeing) on the second day. if you take this precaution then you will not suffer anything drastic. A slight feeling of breadthlessness will continue for 1 week during the nights.

Yes the road trip is a romantic idea but I dont think I think it will be tough to sit through the entire journey as I get motion sickness easily. Besides, I think the better way to see it is to do is slow on your own wheels

ANyway the deal is sealed I have bought my airtickets

First You need to Acclimatize: Minimum of 24 hours of rest

Manali - Leh Bus trip is okay but you may not have your own sweet time to click pictures. BTW, its the most scenic route you would ever find.

Check out the last trip we have

Hiya...

It might be a good idea to do the road journey atleast one way...
There's just nothing like the road trip...
The gradual changing of the scenery from lush green to the dull brown and grey landscape...

One small thing peculiar to the month of September - the winds that lash out are just furious in this autumn month... And when the winds hit the mountain scree, the scree and scree ash can fly and hit you real hard on the face... So, if it's September, it's a good idea to take additional precautions...!

For suggestions, tips and everything else about Ladakh, do check out :
Ladakh in 5 Days...???!!! (Or 6 or 7 or 10 or 15...!!!)

Cheers...!

I felt light headed & weak for the first 2 days,it varies from person to person, but it's better to fly in rather than cross the passes between 16-18000 ft. Drink plenty of water for first few days & plenty of rest.
Hope to get some suggestions
There is a 15 day festival in Leh which usually starts on 1st Sept.

Well, the road is not the best of the area's scenery; it is a long grind, and passes through wonderful country but goes right on by it: Rupshu and Karnak, then the Indus valley.

Flying in gets you to the centre of things, where you can rest up, get used to the thin air, organise trips, see the cultural attractions...a much better solution for most folks. And don't forget you need to get to Manali first, quite an undertaking in itself from Delhi. So you can save 3-4 days of sometimes gruelling road travel by flying, and have more of a holiday.
