Is Leh and Ladakh are different place - I guess probably yes! If yes, is Ladakh is a 'permit zone' (?) i.e. Army?
santanu - I had most of the queries you have as a 1st time traveller to leh and around. A lot of questions are already answered in existign threads.
Would suggest why not read some exiting detailed thread to give you a better perspective.

also go through the maps, the places you will need to take your halts, AMS, culture etc.

For starters apart from the map posted by kshil (which I think is the harsh-aarti map) you can check this map which I found somehwere on IM but cannot recollect the exact thread.
(Originally from BCMT as per the watermark.)
So posting it again.

One would easily think so , looking at the Leh district site - but the western part is Kargil district . Mulbekh , Shergol , Zanskar , Dha & Hanu and Lamayuru are all in Kargil district.

Yes they are two different districts with separate administrations but still Ladakh is the largest district of India and both Ladakh and Kargil districts are included in

Two councils , methinks from the presentation on the district sites: LAHDCK means Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil , and if you look at the list of LAHDC council members at leh.nic.in they all come from the different subdivisions of Leh district. Not a single member from Kargil.

I understand it Vistet, no need to explain so much, LAHDC is the act by which they get some administrative privilege. The last 'K' I appended was a typo.

Though the concept of Hill Council was first fructified in Leh District in 1995 on the pattern of Darjeeling Hill Development Council, it was introduced in Kargil during the year 2003. The then esteemed coalition Govt.; headed by Hon'ble Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was instrumental in bringing Kargil District in the ambit of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council for the border development of the people of the area. The Hill Council in Kargil came in to existence in July 2003. In the 30 Councilors team, 26 Councilors were elected from the respective constituencies, 4 Councilors were nominated from the Principal Minority and Women folk

Also let's stop discussing this off-topic in this thread.

Question Solo woman traveller - Safety?

Hi there,

I'm from B'lore. I'm planning to travel to Leh around July/August 2012 for 15-20 days. Thanks to people here at IM, I'm able to plan my itinerary and no. of days isn't an issue.

Addressed @ the experienced travellers to Leh
-
Could any of you please help with any info w.r.t safety (travelling/accommodation) in and around Leh? I'll elaborate on my plan if that helps in your feedback/suggestions
The person who started this thread seems to be inactive as of now. Knowing the current situation would really help.
Any needful feedback will help immensely.

Sorry, still off-topic, but just to clarify:

Ladakh is not a district, it is a region with two districts, Leh and Kargil. These are also the names of their respective main towns. Each has a separate LAHDC.

Hi guys..

I've a plan to move on mid-August, I just have a couple of question. Do I need to pre-book hotel for that time of arrival (I thought to go for the Khan Manzil though), what you suggests. Also, an even silly question, I hope there's I can get electricity to charge my gadgets, i.e. camera, laptop, phone etc.

It'd be nice to hear from you guys, and possibly even with any tips/suggestions for me during that time.

Thanks!

Pre booking may sometime disappoint you, as you might find better accomodation for better price after you have checked in. Better options is to check into any guest house for a day or two, and then find for yourself a better accomodation, unless you are satisfied with the current one. There are number of guest houses with all the basic aminities, its better to go around and look for whats suitable. And there are many that may ont take pre-booking.

That sounds like a plan, stay somewhere for a day or two and then search for better priced accommodation. Thank you. Just if you advise, what do you think about Khan Manzil, actually I'm opt for a budget accommodation since 11/12 days of my stay there. Or, even any other nearest hotel from the market area.

I haven't stayed in Khan Manzil, but only thing that I realized was that I moved to a better guest house much later ! I wish I had gone around and found a better guest house the next day I had arrived. I think thats what most of the people I met did. And thats when I removed to a accomodation that was suitable to me, mostly in terms of cost. And of course the accomodation was definitely reasonable with all basic aminities.

I understand your point Sir, thank you. I was only wondering for the permit things that I wold may require to arrange the next day I visit there. Or you think it is something that a new traveller like me can arrange there easy also, on myself.
