Hi
We are a family of 9 members (a couple in their 50s another young couple and 5 young adults) planning a Self drive road trip in 2nd week of june to Ladakh. We will be starting from Delhi via Srinagar to Leh and return via Manali.
We have 12-16 days and want to travel easy, with adequate overnight halts at the beautiful and scenic areas. We want to do homestays and tent house if possible especially in Nubra and pangong.

I would be greateful if the experts could share their views and help us –
1. In setting up an itinerary, route plan.
2. What are the various permits we need to obtain and from where.
3. Places to stay with contact details (budget hotels, homestay, tent house) and places must visit.
4. We would like to take the Tata Manza and Fiat Punto/Vista, would they manage to sail through these roads or should we rent the 4x4WD? What are the check lists for preparing my car and myself for the drive?

Rough Itinerary that I prepared is as follows-

7 June : Delhi-Amritsar

8 June : Amritsar – Srinagar (alternatively append the day at Amritsar – wagah border – golden temple and rest)

9 June: Srinagar kargil

10 June: Kargil-Leh via Shaam valley, Alchi, Likir, Magnetic Hill, Confluence (sangam) zanskar, gurudwara pather sahib.

11 June: Leh local sightseeing (Alternatively, If Amritsar day spent then no rest day in Leh)

12 june: Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley

13 June: Nubra Valley - Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh

14 June: Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake

15 June: Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh

16 June: Leh – Jispa/sarchu via Tso Moriri, Tso Kar, Debring, Chumathang

17 June: Jispa – Manali via Pang / Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass

18 June: Manali – Chandigarh/Shimla

19 June: Chandigarh – New Delhi

The Querris -

Q1. My trip in June’13: I trying to touch Tso Kar on the way from Leh to Manali and still be able to reach say Jispa on time!! Possible??
or The day previous to leaving leh, while returning from Pangong instead of a night halt at leh could we halt say in Debris or farther towards Tso Kar, which would enable to save time next day and open the option of visiting Tso Kar? Are there Hotels at all on this stretch?

Q2. My trip in June’13, Where and which hotel to stay in Nubra Valley? From scenic beauty point of view. Diskit or Hunder or Sumur etc?

Q3. My trip in June’13, Is it necessary to make advance hotel booking in smaller towns like Kargil, Nubra, Pangong, Jispa/Keylong during this period of June? We are btw way 9 people so might need 3 rooms! Am sure Srinagar, Leh, Manali we wont require advance booking would we (Rush season)??

hi
your Itinerary is okay only thing is in ladakh you should have at least one buffer day as some time whether play spoil sport .
also if possible make it only ladakh trip and visit Amritsar some other time or add another day.
When You plan Tso kar it should be Leh /karu to tso moriri with an over night halt.
then You can proceed from Tso Moriri to tso kar , Debris , pang route to reach Jispa in about 13 hours long Drive.
Its always good to have advance booking in kargil , Srinagar and at least one Night in Leh when arriving. So is Manali which should be done once you have almost completed Ladakh trip just before you leave for manali & Jispa.
Cheers....

Self Drive Srinagar Leh Manali June 2013 itinerary & accommodation guidance nee

Even I am planning on a trip to Leh-Ladakh in the month of June. My dates are 15th to 23rd June, and travelling with 4 other friends and wifey.

My doubts are something like this -

1. Should start the road trip from Delhi itself, or should we fly till Manali/Srinagar and then hire cars from there?

2. Is it easy enough to hire cars in those two locations? And how feasible will it be to hire a self driven car? Is that even a possibility?

3. Are the number of days good enough to cover Srinagar, Leh and Ladakh? Or shall we have to cut something out?

4. What are the different kinds of permissions we'd need to get, and where?
