Safety in Leh and Ladakh
I am planning trip in June/July to this area.
Is this area safe - my guide book has not sent a reporter there since 2001 due to safety concerns. Is this to be ignored.??? also is there alot of backpackers around HP and Ladakh in June/July/Aug? Thanks |

What guidebook is this? I don't think it's very reliable if this is the impression they give. Perhaps they are confusing Ladakh with the Kashmir Valley as both are part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
We were in Leh and other parts of Ladakh last August/September and had absolutely no problems. As far as I know it is a totally safe area. We also spent some time there about five years ago, again very enjoyable and with no problems. There has been a noticeable rise in that time in the number of backpackers visiting Ladakh since our first visit, and some people are worried about the effect this will have on the local infrastructure and the traditional way of life. If you use the search engine on this forum you will find lots of info on Ladakh and if you find something is not covered there, then we have our own resident expert on all aspects of Ladakh, mountaingirl, who will be able to answer your queries.

I've also been there this august and, as Alan D has said, it's a completely safe area and Leh, was so full of tourist (backpackers or not) on that season.
I've gone there through the road from Manali and in spite of its roughness I strongly recommend to do this journey to reach ladakh. enjoy india and specially Ladakh! |

Leh, is nowhere near the border. I have been to Leh. I think even Kashmir is safe. May be Kargil used to be unsafe. Even that, not anymore.
But , Leh always was safe, is safe and touchwood , will be. |

Absolutely Safe
Hi,
2002 was a little problem. But since then Ladakh is absolutely safe and even the rest of Kashmir is calming down, due to peace processes from india and pakistan. as long as you don't want to cross any borders nothing will happen. greetings from vienna nyiltsa |
