River Rafting in Ladakh

rafting in ladakh is very much on. can be done on the indus as well as the zanskar.
the indus is a level 3 and cost 700-800 rupees (as of last year, july 2006). the stretch is from phey to nemu, which is just after the point where the indus meets the zanskar. the stretch is pretty long, around 26 km, lasts over 3 hours, includes a short stop-over midway, and finally, a hot meal with tea at the end of it. our group included 18 people (all foreigners, except me), and our tour bus driver lost his way, and ended up at the end-point of nemu instead...! then he drove back to phey, the start point. but no one minded, as we got to see such beautiful landscapes and the meeting point of the two rivers - indus and zanskar.
the zanskar is a level 4 (can be a level 5 too) and is slightly more technical in nature. cost 1400 rupees as of last year. the trip lasts longer as the ride to the start point from leh is much longer. one also gets to cross a river using a pulley bucket, which is a unique experience by itself.
and one can easily book these trips while one is there in leh. there are a couple of rafting organisers but each and every shop is a travel agent. so, it's better to get the booking done with the main guys rather than through someone else.
