rangdum or panikahar to leh in one day

1)Can we cover rangdum -leh or panikhar -leh in one day.we need to stop along the way for photography,at alchi, mulbech, lamayaru, zanskar confluence and other important places.

2)which is better for short hikes.1 day.panikar we know has short hikes to ridges near to kun and nun .has anyone done that.

3)we know there is a monastery in rangdum.is that a must visit. Is rangdum worth visiting at all in june.

It will be of immense help if you answer these quetions.

Randgum Gompa is stunnigly beaufiful Place, alomst must in any time of the year (especially June)

so ideally there is no direct route from Rangdum to Leh, we have to come back to Kargil before proceeding back to Leh --- right ?

Rangdum, Penji La and Drung Drang glacier

Hi,

We are visiting Zanskar and Ladakh in end August. My questions are :

1. what are the staying options at Rangdum?
2. how much time does it take from Rangdum to Penji La and Drung Drang glacier?
3. if I hire a Sumo from Kargil for three days to visit Rangdum, Penji La and Drung Drang....what will be my approx charges?
4. i have heard that in end August, we can find a lot of agricultural activities in the fields along the way..is it true?

Incidentally I am a photographer and this is my first visit there...any suggestions will be highly welcomed.

Thanks
-Sugato

hi sugato,
Its great decision you decided to visit suru valley.it was absolutely beautiful when i visited there in june.the roads are real bad.i wouldnt be surprised if your tyre bursts atleast once.
1)There is j n k guest house at rangdum.you should be able to find accomodation as few people travel to rangdum.
2)no idea.
3)kargil--rangdum =1 days travel .2 day for excursion and third day for coming back.So you have to pay three days tariff that translates normally to 9000-10000 bucks.but kargil guys might charge you extra.
4)there are fields, waterfalls(small),gorge s,great views of nun kun .i dont if its the harvest time but the route is scenic.

Thanks Santos... we will spare a day at Panikhar village as well...on our way to Rangdum. I have heard that its a very scenic village. We plan to stay for 2 nights at Rangdum. Can u tell me about the landscape in Rangdum and its monastery? Is it a typical Ladakh landscape?

First off, if you are interested in photography then visit Suru Valley at mid or end September, that is when you will get to see the famous red/orange grass.

With respect to Rangdum, there is a J&K Tourist Bungalow, PWD rest house and home stay option.

Rangdum to Pensi La would take around hour and a half, more if you are taking plenty of photography breaks.

Not recommended - extremely bad roads or in other sense is possible if you really need to

Ideally halt at Panikhar and then next day make a dash for Leh or take a night halt at Lamayuru or Alchi

Agree with Dmitrz.. You should take a halt at Panikhar or some place on the way to Rangdum. Enjoy the beauty as much as you can.

As far as Penzi la is considered, it will take you around 2 hr or more to reach the top as road conditions are really worse.
Avoid shortcuts after Rangdum as there are some nallah which may be overflowing with water.

To talk about scenic beauty, you can not express in words.. Unfortunately, I lost my camera while rafting so could not provide you recent pictures of the valley.
If you have 3 days in hand, I would suggest you to do it leisurely

Man, I was more worried about the photos, I lost .
Actually, the instructor should have informed us about the rapid on the way so that we could have kept the camera in the polythene bag attached to the raft
