Rafting options in Leh are basically as follows:

1. Indus - from Phey to Nimmoo (which is the confluence point of Zanskar and Indus rivers)- about 2.5 hours in water, 1100 Rs per person (incl transportation from Leh to Phey and back from Nimmoo to Leh)

2. Zanskar river - from Chilling to Nimmoo - about 1.5 to 2 hours in water depending on wind speed and direction, 1600 Rs per person (incl transportation from Leh to Chilling and back from Nimmoo to Leh)

During my recent trip to Ladakh a couple of weeks back, we only had half a day available. Since there were 4 of us, we requested Splash Adventures (as recommended somewhere else in this forum) to especially organize a rafting trip on Zanskar for about an hour in the afternoon (i've forgotten the starting point, its about half an hour downstream from Chilling) for Rs 1200 each. The experience was delightful- there were about 2 to 3 big rapids (Grade 3 plus to 4) and several whirlpools. However, only the first 30 mins or so were exciting, the rest of the journey down to Nimmoo was relatively flat.

If you are planning rafting, i'd suggest you keep one full day for it, since the Indus stretch is too long to be done in half a day and the starting point for the Zanskar one (Chilling) is about 2-2.5 hours road drive from Leh.

hi...thanks mini and Mr.Amar for ur suggestions....

Actually according to my plan....i thought may be if its possible to cover Alchi, Likir and Lamayuru and further do rafting...
Whether it ll be possible to do all these in 1 day....
if not...what should i prefer whether doing Lamayuru, alchi,Likir is better or rafting over Zanskar/indus...

Further if anyone knows more interesting places over this route to Lamayuru...please do tell.....

I doubt if both rafting and Lamayuru can be done on the same day. Leh to Lamayuru is approx 4-4.5hours one way. Enroute you would stop at Alchi n Likir. So both things on a single day would not be possible. What you could do is spend the night at Lamayuru and raft on the second day.

Agree with Amar. I did Lamayuru, Alchi, Likir, Magnetic Hill and spent some time at Nimoo (confluence point) in a single day, and only managed to return to Leh by 8 pm.

Also, until 3 weeks back, there was some construction activity happening on this road, so we had to wait for a good 1.5 hours somewhere between Alchi and Lamayuru for the road to be cleared up. Its not a good idea to travel around Ladakh on a tight time schedule as many such unforeseen hold-ups always tend to happen.

Regarding choosing between rafting and Lamayuru/Alchi/Likir, i personally would choose the latter since i m all in favor of barren landscapes, good photo oppotunities and monasteries. The road to Lamayuru is very scenic (Indus next to the road for a major part of the journey, and moon's-surface-like terrain for some 15 mins before Lamayuru). Plus, i really liked the cave paintings at Alchi. However, you could choose rafting if you've never done it before and feel that this is the best opportunity you'd get.

Hiya...

450 bucks must be for a much shorter rafting stretch...
Could you confirm which stretch on the Indus you are referring to...

I had also mentioned Splash Adventures on a thread quite sometime back :

Day 4 : Check out the option of Rafting on the Indus - again, only if you are adventure-inclined. For this, you would need to book yourself with one of the rafting operators the previous evening - the main operator is 'Splash Adventure Tours' very easy to find in the main Leh Bazaar. Ask for the Phey - Nimoo rafting stretch, which is from East to West, which is how the Indus flows after having flowed South to North before that... Nimoo is where the Zanskar meets the Indus. You have to see this lovely sight whether you take the rafting option or drive down. If you raft, you'll be picked up from the main Bazaar, given lunch after your rafting is done, and get dropped back in Leh by the operator. If you drive, another place to see would be a point marked on the road where there is supposed to be some magnetic activity under the earth's surface and an optical illusion would make it appear that the stationary vehicle is climbing up the incline. Or something like that...!

Our bus driver actually reached Nimoo by road itself...! He was supposed to drop us off at Phey, and then reach Nimoo to pick us up for our return trip later in the afternoon... But, no one really minded the extra time taken, because we were all soo stricken by the amazing stark barren beauty all around us to really care... So, we got to see the confluence of the two rivers both from the road above and then while actually rafting over the confluence spot...!

Check out this map of Ladakh to get a better idea of what I have talked about :

Do look up this thread for everything you wanted to know about Ladakh...

Ladakh in 5 Days...???!!! (Or 6 or 7 or 10 or 15...!!!)

Cheers...!
