I was searching this thread for quite a while to figure out what is actually the better option for moving around in Ladakh: going on an organized tour or hiring a private taxi/jeep - but it's still not really clear for me.
I'm actually rather easy and prefer to take it as it comes, therefore would prefer to travel to Leh first, see what are the options and then hire a private jeep for a more individualized tour. But since I'm a female traveling alone, I'm not sure, if that's save enough because some of my Indian friends told me some bad stories, which happened to female travelers (even in a small group)...
Furthermore, I understood that foreigners have to travel in a group of four into restricted areas: Is it easy to find travel mates during July in Leh? The must be lakhs of tourists around...?
Although I rather tend to hire a taxi/jeep on my own, I don't want to risk being screwed in Leh because I can't find travel mates etc and then at the end can't really move around.
Thanks for advises and sharing experiences!

Hi thatskaushik

That's almost a bit too late for me since I wanted to leave early next week. However, if my plans get delayed, which is not unlikeyl, I'd be quite interested to share. Is it just the two of you traveling?

Don't worry, Leh is packed with tourists and you'll find plenty of travel mates there.

You don't need to travel in a group of four, just that your travel agent would need to show that while applying for permit. In any case, once you reach Leh, just go to any travel agent and they would club you with other people. Alternatively, check at various cybercafes in Leh, they usually have flyers from other travelers, who are planning to travel to various parts and want company.

Tukul,

A friend and I are flying to Leh on the 8th morning, and we're looking for folks to share a cab with for local travelling, Tsomoriri and Nubra Valley excursions, and the drive from Leh to Manali (we will leave 13th/14th for Manali). If you're travelling on the same dates, call me - +91 995 808 4198.

Hi there!

Thanks for the informations!! In this case, I will just go there and look out for travel mates.

Rish, I'll probably arrive in Leh at the 10th or 11th and give you a call once I'm there!

From Rishikesh you have the option of traveling through Himachal (would take longer) or riding through plains via. Saharanpur Yamumnanagar Ambala or Dehradoon Panota Sahib Nahan Ambala.

As for hotel costs, they are available for every budget, from ultra cheap to ultra expensive. You can camp if you want, in quite a few places in Ladakh, there are camping grounds or you can pitch tents in a field after taking permission from farmers.

Dont worry .all will go well in land of llamas.people dont cheat there.at worst you can be milked for money.not groped or something.

you can find lot more foreigners than local ladakhis.hehe.lot of female one.you will geta buddy soon.or just to be safe , land in hotel like oriental guesthouse and advertise for travel partners in thier reception.go around town (travel agents) you will see lots of people advertising for travel mates.you will surely get a travel partner.

no lakhs of tourist.the entire population of leh may not be in lakhs.

i say all this from personal experience.i visited ladakh ths june;
