Post Planning to visit Ladakh-Need advice

Hi,

We(2 couples) are planning to visit Ladakh around July end.

Earlier we had planned to take 8N/9D package from Yatra.com but after looking reviews on the web... Dropped the idea

Now we have planned to take flights for Delhi-Leh-Delhi and plan the trip ourselves in Leh.

After looking on the posts i concluded that 2 Day Leh, 2 Day Pangong & 2 days in Nubra would be OK... keeping 1 day as spare it would come to total 7 days....

We plan to spend 1 night at Pangong lake and another 1 at Nubra.

We plan to hire Taxi/Bike from Leh for the trip.

Pl advice if the above is OK.... If I have missed something which is a much see during the trip pl add...

I know this thing would have been discussed earlier also in many threads.. if yes pl share the links as I could not find them.

Thanks in advance.

Technically what you say is yes and it might add up for example 2 D nubra + 2 day Pangongtso + 1 day spare So that adds up to 5 days and 2 days for your travel to and from delhi.

But acclimatization - given any thought to it or you still have to know what it is all about?

Please start reading the sticky threads. Your plan has some serious issues, which have been discussed a dozen times.
Bike rides - Kashmir to Leh and Sikkim, Jungle safaris - Corbett,Chikhaldara, Kanha and Gorumara. Traveled through MP, Himachal, J&K, Maharashtra, W.Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Goa, Karnataka, AP . . . Yet feel so New to traveling in India.

We would be flyin to Leh and hence the day we arrive would be for acclimatization.

I would surely go over all those and would come back if something new comes to mind.

What do you say about the Yatra package... they are offerin 35K which includes 6 Night Leh, 1 Night Nubra & 1 night Pangong. Includes flight both ways, all meals, ILP, vehical....
It looks like a good deal....

I do not want to debate if yatras plan s good or bad. Why not read what acclimatization is and also read the Leh in less than 5 days thread.

Yatra or self would make sense later when you actually understand it and go on planning or analyzing day by day plan.

Hi New_Traveller

After going thru all the sticky threads i prepared the following itinerary..

Day 1: Arrive in Leh

Fly in to Leh & relax the whole day.

Day 2: Sightseeing near Leh
If health is OK then Visit the below
The Hall of Fame
Kali Mata Temple
Spituk Gompa of Ladakh
Spituk
Gurudwara Patthar Sahib
Magnetic Hill

Day 3: Drive from Leh to Nubra Valley
In the afternoon, visit Hunder village & Overnight stay in Nubra.

Day 4: Drive from Nubra Valley to Leh
Local sightseeing on the way and visit local marker in Leh

Day 5: Drive from Leh to Alchi
Also would visit Likir Monastery on the way back to Leh.

Day 6: Drive from Leh to Pangong Lake
Would spend the night at camp in Pangong lake.

Day 7: Return to Leh
Visit some monastery on the way

Day 8: Depart back from Leh to Delhi

Pl suggest if I have missed something which is a must see....

I can extend for 1 day also.

Thanks

You can actually go upto Drass and visit the war memorial. IMHO it is a must visit for every Indian.

Day 3: Drive from Leh to Nubra Valley
In the afternoon, visit Hunder village & Overnight stay in Nubra.

Day 4: Drive from Nubra Valley to Leh
Local sightseeing on the way and visit local marker in Leh

This is being discussed along with the risks in the thread - Leh in less than 5 days. Please know the risks before heading for this. Safer option might be to move day 5 as Day 3 and then day 4 start the nubra part.

Day 5: Drive from Leh to Alchi

Also would visit Likir Monastery on the way back to Leh.
I did not visit Alchi but I am sure this can be done on your day 2. this day can be a rainy day or buffer day and can be enjoyed in Leh.

Day 6: Drive from Leh to Pangong Lake
Would spend the night at camp in Pangong lake.

Day 7: Return to Leh
Visit some monastery on the way
Hemis

Day 8: Depart back from Leh to Delhi

Pl suggest if I have missed something which is a must see....

I can extend for 1 day also.

Acclimatization is most important for Leh travel.
I agree with New traveller about day shuffle.
I can't see below in your itinerary -
Thiksey Monastery
Diskit Monastery
Grand statue of future Buddha in Nubra Valley
Shey Palace
Stok Palace

Both......
But if I have to chose one option then Pangong.
If you are planning to stay one night in Pangong then it is better option becoz road is comparatively better except last stretch around "Pagla nalla" but if you are planning to do in one day then it will be too tiring.

we will do stay in both Pangong and Nubra..

So Pangong is more scenic beauty on the way...?

actually we are not hardcore bikers and hence we dont want to take a route which is more tough terrain...

Pangong on bike would take like 5-6 hours or more..?

What is this Pagla Naala..???

I am not sure why the comparison between nubra and pangoang tso.
Also did not understand the bikers part? Are you planning to hire bikes coz I think you are flying in.

About the terrain the entire ladakh is tough and harsh. Please keep in mind it is a dessert (cold) so it is harsh. The roads(you might not have any at times) are not as smooth as you see in the most famous pictures. There are bad roads prorbly whose pictures are never posted coz they are not scenic.

So mental preparation is as much important as preparing physically and preparing your bikes (which in your case is a bigger risk due to rented bikes, please check on the right rental agency in advance and get some good bikes)

Pagal Nalla - as its name as it got crazier as the sun went higher. Actually this is a huge stream which flows on the road. The stream is coming from the source of melted snow and the melting increases as the sun gets brighter. There were times that the nalha could not be crossed after 11 or 12 noon. (read about it so could be wrong)

But last year when we went they have built a bridge over it and we did not face any issue. We did not even realize which was the famous pagal nalla.

Thanks for the advice... yes we are flyin in to Leh and hence we would like to have some adventure on Bikes also... so we want to have either Pangong or Nubra on Bike... Both would be too hectic as we are not regular bike riders..

Can you name some good reliable Bike renting agency..??

No I do not have any references for any agencies. But make sure you prebook some motorcycles. My friend spent 2/3 days waiting in leh for getting a few bikes as ot was peak season.

If you are not regular bikers and not riding in city then it is better not to drive to Nubra or Pangong.
In many parts there is no road and glacier melting in June/July is maximum. I agree with New_traveller that you should be mentally prepared becoz it is rough terrain.
For experience you can rent the bike for site seeing in and around Leh, like go to Stupa, Thiksay, Hemis and Stok etc.
