Photos from Leh to Manali trip Aug 07
Hi folks
May I humbly submit our snaps taken during our trip from Manali to Leh. Do zoom in to enjoy the little details. They have been scaled down from 10MP but still have lots of interesting bits. The link is as follows-- http://picasaweb.google.com/mamtamil...ographsFromLeh For those of you with whom I had a long discussion about stargazing-well I did carry all my astronomy gear but was discouraged by fatigue, clouds and the full moon (and the cold winds at Sarchu). A big thanks for all who gave me good advice. Milan Last edited by machadinha : Sep 12th, 2007 at 12:44. Reason: fixed url |

Brilliant photos!
If I may interpose a self-serving request for information: Did you set up your car through an agency in Leh? If so, which? |

Thanks Radjesh. The sky if clear is indeed amazingly blue. I wish I had a polarizing filter.
Minnesota- The Car was prearranged by someone for us. It is apparently not too difficult to sort out your taxi once you arrive at Manali. |

Radjesh I used a Nikon D80.
saajan20- The Innova was comfortable to ride, though perhaps not the ideal vehicle for the trip. The Innova has a lower ground clearance, and in a couple of places the bottom did scrape the road. Mind you it was being driven by someone who does this regularly for a living and knows how to avoid this. There are several patches along the route where there is a potential for this. This is especially true of areas where the 1. Road is covered with pebbles, rocks and boulders 2. Road is muddy and trucks leave deep ridges in the road 3. Road is covered by large puddles and potholes the size of a fish pond 4. Where streams run accross the road |

that is an unbelievable set of photos, i went through the entire set shaking my head at some of those pictures...the beauty is beyond words...just further reinforces the fact that the journey by road from manali to leh is a MUST! milan, how long was your manali-leh trip? how much did you pay? staying in tents along the way looked really cool...any major altitude sickness problems? sorry for so many questions, but seeing those pics has got me all intrigued now

Thanks every one. The amazing thing about the trip is that you can point your camera just about anywhere and still get unbelievable pictures. Every bit of it is worth capturing on camera. I guess the entire Ladakh is !!

Akhenaton- My journey from Manali to Leh was over three days. I paid Rs 13000 for the Innova, and Rs 1800 per room/tent per day. The tent stay was for 1 night only ie at Sarchu. The tent had an attached toilet with a western type commode and running water! It was cold and windy at Sarchu. I was on Diamox 250mg twice a day, having started it 2 days before the trip. I only experienced some tingling in my fingers and toes. The others were not on any medication and some of them suffered from a pounding headache and nausea. This started shortly after reaching Sarchu, got worse the next day, and improved on reaching Leh. I wish I could stop at several places and spend time there, but the driver as well as the ones with a headache kept rushing me a bit, and I had to relent.
Personally I get car sick especially where the road twists and turns (hence no picture of gatta loops maybe) but did not experience it on the trip. We felt drained on reaching Leh and did not stick to the original itenirary of going to Pangong and the Nubra Valley but decided to chill out. I have left it for another day. Milan |

I saw your pictures as a slideshow ...they are really, really amazing! ... wonderful colorful, great clarity and very well-composed! Congrats. It was a great pleasure to seem them, on my big SyncMaster monitor. The pictures do come alive on a good monitor. Two questions ...(1) Which Camera? (2) At what MP you took these pics? - KS |

Thanks KS
I used a Nikon D80 at 10 MP. Converting the raw images to Jpeg compresses them to about 2-3 mb each(originals being 8-9 mb each). It does lose some data when you upload it to Picasa or to IndiaMike. Milan |
