Starting from bombay around 12th june and from manali 16th june.
But all depends on when the roads open and the road/weather condition

I think your dates are pretty safe compared to 15th May opening of Rohtang last year.

Your advice/ suggestions on the itinerary?
Pls suggest accommodation at each place. Is there a web site where I can get info & book accommodation.
Where can I get the latest news of the road opening and the conditions?
SARCHU??!! PANG??!!
I.e. the Vomit Hilton, and the Vomit Hilton Plus?
Are you TRYING to get AMS? If not, then from Jispa make a run for Upshi. Only 50 km from Leh, but I reckon it'll be a long enough drive from Jispa.
And make sure you've had a few nights at Manali or Solang first.

If you must stay at either Hilton, do it on the way back when you'll be much better acclimatised.

hey rp
since there are couple of friends also going to join us it seems difficult. if you have a vehicle we can start off together from mumbai. alternately, depending on your schedule, we could still do the trip together, full or part, if you have your vehicle and think of taking it from mumbai or else do it from delhi. we are planning to start mid june abt 14th. let us know how it suits you.

We are still in two minds whether its doable in the safari and by just two of us. We have several questions in mind which sends us back and forth from yes we can do it to may be?

1 How are the road conditions and will an old safari ('99) 2WD, made upto condition, make it. We read that buses and trucks traverse these roads, which makes us feel that we too can do it in our safari, but we also read personal experiences and see some pictures making us think otherwise. Can we do it?

2 What would be the best time to do the trip by road? We were planning to start from mumbai by mid june. Will they open by then? Will they be icy still at that time. Safari is a heavy vehicle and this one is not a 4WD. If the road conditions are better at a later date we may think of rescheduling. How do we keep ourselves upto date about the road conditions. Are the climbs steep & narrow, will the Safari be able to climb.
dear vicktaa

i am planning to go to leh next year along with my wife, if you are not going this year, pls let me know, may be we cud join and go together, but i wud like to hire a vehicle from manali or srinagar to go to leh, cos you get an experienced local driver and its always helpful,

but if you are going this year, i wish you a very very great journey, but one request pls note down all the contact info of local hotels or taxi owners if you come across, this will be very helpful to us

cheers

leh trip...

hi victaa....

I have a vehicle and i am ready to travel by my own vehicle also from mumbai. The only issue is that by my vehicle, i can go only till manali at the max because its a maruti alto and i dont think i can go till Leh by alto.also it is only me, my wife and 9 yrs daughter and i am the only driver thats why i was little worried travelling so long without any company. I am free after 13th june and we can join u both from 14th june till manali in our vehicle if ur travelling that side after 13th june. Kindly let me know ur travel plan, enroute halts etc so that i can also chalk out my plan if we decide to go by car rather than train from mumbai.

RP
Alto is good enuff as long as it is in a v.good condition.Slight modifications can be cheaply dun. What i hve been reading on various sites that alto is a gud vhcle.,but since u would be driving alone it can be tiring.U could go to leh via srinagar and return via manali that makes it easier as far as acclimitaztion is cncrnd.
Any help pl email faustus77@gmail.com or cal ,(i stay in bombay)

my wife & I are planning to visit to leh this June - July.
Dates are a bit flexible, (unless something unavoidable comes up) for about 15 days.

I have driven several times from Surat to Nanital & Haridwar, so distances are not a problem.

So either we can drive down from here in own vehicle
OR
Hire a self driven private passing taxi from Delhi for the entire trip
OR
Form a small group to hire taxi for the leh trip based on shared costs

The intinerary can be worked out.
"PPl looking for leh trip on shared travel costs basis OR self driven vehicle basis, pls write back to me, if interested

I have been following your thread and your changing schedules. Now it seems like your schedule is almost the same as mine. I should be leaving from Mysore in SX4 around 24th June (Me + Wife + Daughter). We may have another Innova with friends. I am leaving for sure. Probably we can align our schedules so that we could make a caravan from Mumbai and proceed further up?. My schedule is flexible so let me know when you guys are planning to start-off from Mumbai. I have driven Mysore-Manali-Leh-Srinagar-Jammu-Mysore 3 times in last 3 years so you guys can depend on my experience of the region.

it will be good to join the party!
our plans are still on for 27th/28th jun, but not firmed yet for few more things to take care. i need to test drive the safari as it seems to give a bit of last minute trouble, so need to make sure things are okay. also one business chore needs to be taken care of, if on time we may be able to make it. also there is anxiety building up and still creating some fears in our mind. in any case we could exchange inteniraries and contact details, in case things workout, we could get in touch. my email id is vicktaa@gmail.com & cell 9820087443.

Ladakh trip has become annual ritual for us and so no plans as such. Get into car and just go away for 3 weeks. Plans don't seem to work most of the times. So we should go sometime this month end. Keep me posted on your departure and lets see if we can align.
