Question Motorbike rental in Leh

Hi. I am considering to rent a motorbike in Leh for a few days and use it for exploring near monasteries and villages. Has anybody tried it or have any relevant information, especially regarding motorbike availability, prices, etc.
Also, is an international driving licence necessary when renting the bike (in fact, I do have an old expired piece but it is not more than translation of my national licence anyway)?
Thanks for your experience and time.

From Loram's book:
350cc enfield bullet..800/day
100cc yamaha rs600/day

He says to arrange through travel agent. Usually passport or air ticket will be needed as deposit. Does not say anything about licenses or stores for bikes in leh.

I'm curious about this too..I have an Indian car driving license..does this suffice for motorbikes? Also, if anybody knows any stores that they would recommend in Leh for the bikes that would be great!

No, you need a two-wheeler license.

There are plenty of places in Leh where you can get a bike in rent, a friend of mine had rented a bike from Planet Himalaya in Leh. Here is the link to their contact details (scroll down to the last post).

while visiting Ladakh in Aug 2007 I had enquired about renting bikes from few renters........ price was around 600-800 per day.......... they usually keep as deposit driving licence or passport........apparently you don't require to carry driving licence with you always

You are required to carry driving license while driving/riding, but then renters don't really care. If the police of army catches you then it is your headache!
