This is the most common idea on AMS prevention , and I feel this is at best a misconception : some headaches go away after increasing water intake , but this does not mean that drastic increases is a cure against AMS. You will notice that it is not an advice repeated by the medically trained , in fact for example The Himalayan Rescue Association specifically warns against this strategy :
"Adequate amounts of fluid (about 3 liters a day) are necessary in the mountains: dehydration mimics altitude sickness and may even predispose to it. On the other hand excessive water drinking should also be avoided as this may lead to electrolyte imbalances."

thanks so much for your advice. We are reading up on avoiding AMS and are looking to prevent it from happening by drinking lots of water and taking prophylactic diamox. I have also been reading the posts on indiamike itself. Bro Abhay, I would just like to ask if you have any recommendations for hotels/hostels around Cantonment Train Station in Bangalore. For one night only. looking at mid-range (Rs500-Rs900). Thank you.
Bangalore hotels are probably most expensive. I am really not aware of particular hotels in contonment, but there would be many in the range you mentioned around Bangalore City Railway station (Majestic, Gandhinagar area about 4-5 kms from Contonment station). You can make your choice at http://www.makemytrip.co.in/makemytrip/Hotels. Good thing is you can book online through credit card without any hassles. I usually use this site whenever I need to book in unknown cities. Hope it helps.

Hi Hamid
Last year, in early june, I went to Ladkha with my family in my Santro car. I have put all the happenings and other informations related to the journey in a blog. If you wish, you can go through it. You may extract something out of it which may turn out to be very useful for your on coming journey.
