Manali to Leh
Dear all,
I am intending to travel to Leh via Manali from Delhi in the first week of June. Has anyone travelled during this period before or is anyone intending to do this, this coming year? I would like to get more information regarding the safety of the roads during this period. If it is not safe, any alternative routes possible? I would hate to miss going to Leh as this is one of the few chances I get to visit North India in a long long time. Cheers, Hamid ![]() |

Hi, and welcome to IndiaMike. Although I'm not sure of the period, the question gets asked quite a lot, so search the site and its appropriate sub-forums some.
If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you'll find a listing of "similar threads." Opening any of those will again feature a list of similar threads at bottom, and so on and so forth. It's an easy way to navigate the site.

Normally the Leh-Manali Highway is opened for public in mid May. Depending on the road conditions and the amount of snow on the road. However Srinagar Leh highway opens earlier - so you can take that road.

Srinagar-Leh: opening dates
Keep in mind that opening is not necessarily a permanent thing , freak weather can can hit you early in the season - examples of this in the links. |

I would suggest you yourself scout for guest houses in Leh, you can get a double bedroom in less than Rs. 400/- a night. In fact Leh bus stand is not yet polluted with the hotel agents unlike other tourist places in India.
So you walk into the market (or take a taxi) and look for guest houses. And about Manali, go to Basisth if you wish a quiter and scenic place to stay. Many Guest houses are there, you can stay according to your budget. Keep your options open - don't prefix any hotel or guest house before reaching the pace. At least this is my experience and almost always this attitude has helped me in reducing cost and explore a convenient place to stay. |

Hello Hamid, Last year Rohtang opened on 13th May and I crossed it from Manali side on 23 May in car. If you go soon after opening of Rohtang, its kind of difficult because road side support services (tents, chai...) all not fully operational but beauty of place is top class because travellers have not yet started dirtying the place and muddy the ice with their exhausts. Safety: I have done in May end, June end and July end and safety had never been an issue. It just is difficult sometimes in some part of the season depending upon quantum of snowfall the previous year and rains in the area. As such, weather in high passes changes by the minute, but it definitely is not life threatening. Check out facts related with snowfall last year, when Rohtang is expected to open this year and some ground info. I guess this year snow was a lot more and may be June 1st week could be just ok with all facts considered. If you ask me, I would still go ahead and plan for 1st week of June because Manali-Leh drive is best soon after opening of Rohtang. Regards Abhay |

Manali to Leh

Notice you are from Singapore too. A small group of us (4) from Singapore plans to travel to Delhi on June 5 and then slowly making our way to Shimla - Daramsala - Manali then to Leh. Would probably cross Leh around the same time, maybe a couple of days later. How can we be in touch? Paul mod note Hi Paul, and welcome to IndiaMike. Generally we suggest to first time members that they not publish their email address on the forum (the address will be picked up by any number of search engines resulting in spam being sent to you). Accordingly it has been removed. You can either reply to one another via this thread, or if the need is urgent - create a temporary email address (and let us know in the post that it is a temp email address). Thanks for your help with this. Last edited by brownboy66 : Mar 30th, 2008 at 14:34. |

Hi Paul,
Nice to know you'll be in Leh around the same time. Why don't you drop a mail at hamidrazak@gmail.com then we'll exchange numbers or something? don't wanna publish my contact number on the web! |

Hey Bro Abhay.
thanks so much for your advice. We are reading up on avoiding AMS and are looking to prevent it from happening by drinking lots of water and taking prophylactic diamox. I have also been reading the posts on indiamike itself. Bro Abhay, I would just like to ask if you have any recommendations for hotels/hostels around Cantonment Train Station in Bangalore. For one night only. looking at mid-range (Rs500-Rs900). Thank you. |
