err... about the Inner line permits:
Any directions to the place? Can I arrive by like 2pm, apply and get them next early morning (like 10-11am)? What's the latest time by which I can reach the permit office and STILL get the permits the same day? Any guidance, mucho appreciated? |

Pyaare,
you can get the permits on the same day.. should not be a problem - subject to the DC being in office.. Follow this process : Go to the DC office, it's next to the polo ground. Take a handwritten application alongwith you. Application should state 1 - That you are an Indian national 2 - The list of areas that you wish to travel to AND the travel dates AND also the number of days. 3 - Your full name incl. father's name and correspondence address - Ok to write the full address of only one member and the cities for the rest. Go to the ADC and get this application signed off by him. He's a good fellow and shall do it without any bother. Then take this signed off application to the Head clerk's office, that's the last door on the right as you come out in the corridor from the ADC's office. Ask him for the form to be filled up... he'll give you 2 copies.. take a carbon paper from him only... Fill up the form and get it initialled by the head clerk... and take it from him and again approach the ADC for his signature... Once that is done .. again take the forms and go to the head clerk... he'll take one copy for their records... and stamp and give one back to you... well... your ILP's are ready... :-) This process may sound complicated and long drawn... but believe me it's very easy and wont take more than 20 mins if all concerned are in office... One more thing... now a days. the guys at the DC office have started collecting money - official though - for some wildlife corpus... avoid it... easy.. just look as if you've been doing this process for the whole of your life... act as if you're a local... am sure it wont be tough for you... after all the riding you've done in Gujarat...!!! Any confusion do let me know..

A litle late for the answer but i have just come back to civilization after a month.
Jay_J has got it all. It's very simple really. And it only took us 20 mins to get this done before we were on our way out for that day. Just make sure you carry some id and some passport size pics. Once you get the permit, dont forget to make at least 20 photocopies of it. I almost ran out of photocopies by the end of the trip. |

I learnt something while I was in Rajasthan.
Some jackass tourist bought three double humped camels from Leh and carted them to Rajastan along with a caretaker. The idea was to ride them from Rajasthan on to Goa!!!!!!!!! ??????????? But the trip from the desert to the city was enouhg to give the poor camels blisters. They got them to a vet and wanted to be on their way asap, when the Meneka Gandhi followers descended on them. One of the camels didn't make it and died, and the other two were flown back to Leh. The tourists had to pay a penalty for attempting to do this. Okay enough said. Which idiot in the world wants to ride cold mountain camels in the middle of Thar? There are only a handful of those camels left in Leh anyway, and you have to go and kill one of them! God! I am too furious to write more, but people please, if any of you can spread the message to fellow travellers, please do. |

from enigma's PM
I wanted some information about the Inner Line Permits that we'll need to take in Leh.
Just carry all your IDs and passport size pics. The office is right opposite the maidan, very close to the taxi stand. Leh is a small place anyway. Just ask anyone. The entire process shouldn't take you more than half an hour. You will need permits only if you are going out of Leh to the border areas. make sure to xerox several copies of the permit once you get it. And yes, it doesn't cost anything if you do it yourself. You could also give a few hundred and get it done from your travel agent or Hotel desk. Also, while you've given a great account of the distance you travelled, i was curious to know about the average distance that can be covered comfortably in a day !!!! depends on the road conditions, but on an average, i'd say 250 km. anywhere between 200 - 300 km per day. And when I say day, I mean 10 - 12 hours. we are a "drive" crazy family, so I wouldn't know your comfort threshold. But I'd say you can do it very comfortably. We used to go out at 7:00 am in the morning and come back by 7:00 pm everyday while in Leh. and then we'd roam the Leh markets till 10:00 or so. Since you are in Bangalore, you should join us in our meetups sometime. Hope you have a wonderful trip and bring back lots of good pics and memories. ![]() |
