That spot is on srinagar leh highway about 20 Km past khada patthar, on left side of the road as you proceed towards srinagar. As for the live demo of press car I am not sure how old the programme was because on last three visits I did not feel anything though old timers say the occurrence use to happen in past when big 10 tonner Russian Tatra trucks would roll on their own in a narrow belt of about 100 meters. But in all probability now the magnetic field must have changed which is very natural. It is for this reason GOI have never allowed USA to map the Himalayas physically and ladakh region particularly. Mapping of magnetic fields is of much importance as the presence of magnetic fields in big geophysical bodies or land mass can affect the course of IBRM missiles and accuracy rate.
Even zozila pass is rumoured to have a strong megnatic fields and army choppers are known to crash frequently while flying around zozila, but events are erratic and no documents proof avilably to verify. According to an army source a German mining company had offered GOI a big amount of X money to be allowed to mine in that area as the reccee samplers have indicated presence of solid nuggets of precious metals. |

So this is the reason that the 'Bangalore meetup' post has been dormant for the last couple of months.
Anyway, great post Natasha. |

Here is some info on Tso Moriri and Pangong have salt water....from the web ofcourse !!
The Tso Morari Lake This is one of the largest in the Ladakh region and is almost like an inland sea. Situated at an elevation of about 4,900m, it is about 22km long, with a width varying from 5 to 7km and a depth of more than 30 m at the deepest point. The lake is probably a leftover from the Ice Age, formed by the melt waters of the ice masses left behind by the retreating glaciers. The waters from the surrounding areas drained into the lake. The huge amounts of water present in the beginning evaporated very fast in the desert-like atmosphere and what was fresh water became brackish and finally salty, unfit for human consumption. One of the most spectacular lakes in Ladakh is the Pangong Tso, which lies across the Changla Pass from Leh. At an altitude of almost 4,500 metres, the Pangong Tso is only 8 km wide at its broadest point, but is an amazing 134km long. The Pangong is considered to be the longest lake in Ladakh. It is a saltwater lake formed in much the same way as the Tso Morari lake during the Ice Age. Link from where i got this info..http://edugreen.teri.res.in/explore/water/lakes.htm |

1/3rd of Pangong Tso is in India and the rest is in China.
You need a special permission to go there.. The roads are just terrible..

Went to leh this June and did Manali Leh in one day, not the best way to travel. We hired a seat in a jeep and the driver kept at it for clsoe to 18 hours. They are fit for getting trained for F1. The views are fabulous and Leh is special for me. I have put some photos from this trip at:

Magnetic hill
Magnetic hill, Leh’s wonder
Leh, June 6 Imagine a vehicle moving up a steep mountain with its ignition off! A hill near picturesque Leh has magnetic properties which attracts metallic objects, making vehicles move up at a speed of about 20 km per hour with the engines off. The “magnetic hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway, about 30 km from Leh, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. On its eastern side, flows the Sindhu, which originates in Tibet and goes to Pakistan. A group of journalists, visiting Leh to cover the Sindhu Darshan festival, were surprised when they had a first-hand experience of the hill. The local administration has put up a billboard near the hill, stating that if a vehicle is stopped at a particular spot on the road and the engine is switched off, it will not slide down but move up. When the Swaraj Mazda in which the journalists were travelling reached the particular point with the ignition switched off, the vehicle actually started moving upward at a speed of more than 20 km. Considering it to be a mere fluke, the journalists made the driver take the vehicle back to the same point. The same thing happened again. The exercise was repeated several times with the same result. Locals and ITBP personnel, who man the Ladakh border with China, say that to escape the magnetic impact of the hill, helicopters and aircraft have to fly at a relatively greater height. Those aircraft which come into the radius of the hill face jerks similar to those witnessed during turbulence. A few kilometres from the hill is Gurdwara Patthar Sahib where Guru Gobind Singh, had meditated. Maintained by the Army, the gurdwara is more of a place of prayer for the locals, Armymen and tourists. Not many Sikhs from other parts of the country visit it. It is said when Guru Gobind Singh was meditating here, an evil spirit threw a rock from the hilltop at him. The rock did hit him, but Guru Gobind Singh was unhurt. However, the mark of the Guru was left on the rock which is still lying at the gurdwara. The religious place remained unexplored for a long time and was developed only after the Army deputed its personnel for maintenance. The hill is one of the several unique things in Ladakh. The hills and mountains in this region bear different colours. UNI |

Jyoti, yes I did find bikers in the Nubra and the pangong region. Lone bikers. Couples, or sometimes an entire gang.
No, Zanskar valley would require more time. I did get a view of the Zanskar river falling into Indus on my way to Lamayuru, though. Crimson River, coooool!!! So were's the travel account? And btw, your rohtang pics from back in May were so much better. Post your pis and write your account soon. ![]() |
