Horse are Ass
I have finally handed over all my Leh scans to Bigzero. He will be uploading them in the gallery by and by. In the mean time. Here's the puzzle for the day. Are these horses or asses. If they are asses, mind you, I for one, have never heard of galloping asses. And I did get a close look. They looked like horses to me. Sorry for the bad pics but here's my vote: Horses!

Okay. Here's an attempt at enlarged pics. Please note that the rounded necks are not as the appear. It is the mane flying back in the air.
(i have a sinking feeling about this!) |

Somnath just showed me some google images. Apparently, it is the Kiang - or Tibetan Wild Ass. Apparently they are also known for high speed galloping! Well. My only consolation was in the following lines:
"herds of the handsome chestnut brown Asiatic (Wild ass), which is the last of India's wild horse family, does not survive elsewhere in Indian lowlands..." This what wikipedia says: The Kiang (Equus kiang) is a large mammal belonging to the horse family. They are native to the Tibetan Plateau, where they inhabit montane and alpine grasslands from 4000 to 7000 meters elevation. They are the largest of the wild asses, with an average shoulder height of 140 cm. The Kiang is related to the Onager or Asiatic Wild Ass (E. hemionus), and some authorities classify it as a subspecies of Onager, E. hemionus kiang. At least it belongs to the wild horse family. Attaching one close up from google. Well, doesn't the face look more like a horses than a ass'? Well, whatever, it was thrilling all the same to chase them in the wild plains. Can't get must closer to wilderness than that. |

Natasha
This is definitely the Tibetan race of the Asiatic Wild Ass. We saw just a few on our way to Ladakh last year on the Moray Plains. You were lucky to see such a large group. In the rest of India you will only see its sub species, the Indian Wild Ass, in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. I've visited there a couple of times and got pretty close to herds of them. The colouration of the Indian race is much lighter than the Tibetan race.

Thanks, Zzzeehar and all the others.
You guys are the greatest. I wanted to write so much more. In fact, while I was up there, I kept thinking, i have to say this, say that, but by the time i lost some altitude, it all became a blurr. But hey, hope it helps other IMers planning a trip there. That's what IM is about after all. Crimsonriver, i saw them somewhere immediately after the turn you take for Tso Kar on your way to Pang (coming down from Leh to Sarchu.) I believe they can be seen the the Tso Kar Tso moriri area, is the Rupshi Valley? - in case you go looking for them. Machadinha, Alan D, I totally agree. They are very handsome creatures, and I am not in the least undermining the glory and the fortune of encountering something as rare as that in the wilderness. Am waiting for the pics to come in. Must warn though that i have an average camera and could not capture the grandeur of those mountains. But they are your average nice pics. Bigzero, where are you....... And while we're waiting for the pics, here's the phull phamily in front of Wisdom Holiday home in Leh and Natasha the "heroini" in Pangong Tso. ![]() |

Yesterday night on special news section of a channel (TV) I saw a very interesting feature of Magnetic Hill, Ladakh. There was an interview of truck driver and a live demonstration of the press car. They said that at particular point (yellow signboard is there on the road) cars behave strangely. It is a flat bed but if you keep your car in neutral, it moves as it happens in slopes. It is also demonstrated that the cars fail to run faster even in full acceleration. Mind it, it is not a steep. The truck driver speaks about this in a normal way, as this is not something new, but this is just another normal and known thing.
Is it true or faced same experience while you were there in that region? |
