Manali-Leh-Manali / Travel partners required - shared taxi or self drive

my wife & I are planning to visit to leh this June - July.
Dates are a bit flexible, (unless something unavoidable comes up) for about 15 days.

We will be starting from Surat & reaching Delhi & plan to take up a Volvo ( Rajnational express) the best option to reach Manali.

Thereafter, prefer to hire a taxi on sharing basis, ensuring that it takes 2 days reach to Leh along with night halt at sarchu/keylong.
I called up a tour operator & Taxi union stand in Leh to figure out the details & they said a sharing taxi would cost 1500 per head & they start at 2 AM in the night & reach the destination by 6 PM.
I am least interested in doing the Manali Leh highway in such a hush neither wanna use bus service for this route. It dosent make of sense of spending so much time & money not being able to enjoy the scenic beauty.

Could somebody advise on finding shared Taxi option that has been stretched over a period of 2 days.
Or Group of ppl can pool together to hire a taxi, share the costs.
OR may be we can hire Self driven vehicles from Delhi, etc etc

Similar such trip can be planned for sightseeing in & around Leh by hiring a Taxi & sharing the costs.
The intinerary can be worked out.
"PPl looking for leh trip on shared travel costs basis OR self driven vehicle basis, pls write back to me, if interested".

Hi Ashish,

3 of us (including my wife and friend) are also planning to do it around 15-30 Jul this year. Our basic plan starts from 13-Jul. Having done this trip 3 yrs earlier on road (2 Days from Manali-Leh), i wanted to do this spending the same time to soak in the natural beauty.

After spending 4-5 days in Leh visiting Pangong Lake (with night halt since the Lake is best viewed during sunrise/sunset) and other monasteries around Leh. We were planning to drive to Srinagar (2 days) and then either fly back to Delhi after 2 days in Srinagar.

Our idea was to hire a Sumo from Manali and hire another vehicle to Srinagar.

Again this is rough plan and open to modifications.

Hi Ashish and Rajeev,

I am Ashok from Chennai. I am planning to do a trip (majorly same route), in July. It will be great if I can join you people. I will surely confirm this once I get replies from you.

I am planning a minimum of 15 days from Delhi to Delhi round trip. Could you post more details on the planning and places of interest.

I am interested in monastries, lakes and if possible if we can take a day for treking, will be awesome.

Please let me know more details.

Mod Note

Hi Ashok, and welcome to IndiaMike. As a general rule we don't allow first post recommendations of external sites. If specifically asked for then that's ok, but otherwise we get a number of first time posts that are actually advertisements, and as you can appreciate its simply too hard to tell what is and isn't genuine. Thanks for your understanding with this.

Hey...I'm from Mumbai too..and with 3 others, planning to leave on June 21 arriving Delhi by June 22. We plan to take a bus the same evening to Manali, then leave Manali for Leh on June 24. I would prefer a taxi with an overnight halt at a tented accomodation at Sarchu. At Leh, We are planning to spend 3 nights (25,26,27 June) exploring Leh, Khardung La and Pangong. It would be great if like minded people came together and share the expensive transportation costs. We are looking for 3-4 more people.

Hey i dont mind joining since my original plan of 14th has gone kaput. but r u planning a really short trip or what? 3 days is very short for leh. ideally u need 6-7 days there. 1 or 2 days in manali for acclimatization. i wud like a trip of 2 weeks totally. how & when do u plan 2 come back? is it a budget trip? lets discuss a few things here so that other interested ppl can also join and then carry fwd by mails or phone. 1 more thing. I suppose there is some problem on the rail route to delhi due to the gujjar violence. keep a watch on that as well since the trains might not be going regularly.

Hi Suj....well, you are right....we are on a somewhat tight schedule as we have not many days to spare,if not 3, atmost we cud spend 4 days in Leh...but definetly not more than that..Yeh the Gujjar agitation is a problem, but i heard things were settled today so i assume the rail services will be completely restored by june 21. i havent booked tickets yet, plan to book under tatkal.

Hi

I am planning a trip to Leh in July end!

July 26th Saturday - We can leave New Delhi.
August 3rd Sunday. We have to be back in New Delhi. We have to rejoin work on Monday.

I am still working on travel options and place to stay etc. However, I would like the idea to go in a group.

We are both software engineers, working for leading MNCs in the NCR region.

Do you think, we can plan a trip together? If yes, please go ahead and email me your contact details. I would then call you (Admin, is it OK to share personal information here?)
Regards

Taxi In Leh is Very costly

Hi Guys
This Sam here been to Leh number of times.
I will suggest u 2 things
1. go via sirinagar coz road ( 400 km strech) from Manali to Leh is in very bad shape ( widening).
2. Its better to have ur own vhcl coz taxi charges r very high in on Leh route sply in Leh. e.g if u gonna visit Pangon Lake they charge 7000 to 8000 and round the trip is covered in one day only...Same for Nubra n Tso Morari from Leh..This is due the reason that they hv one Taxi Union there n dont hv any other option... if u can afford all that then u may decide accordingly..
All the best
Sam

Hey thx for the info Sam. Yes ur idea is right actually. And problem with public transport is that, there is no chance to stop anywhere for photos.
Shrinath, lets make sure first if such a short trip is going to be worth it. I mean going all the way and not enjoying everything just because we do not have time sounds like a bad idea. But the june 21st date suits me for sure.
