Manali-Leh 2006 uptodates

http://http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph...bum?.dir=/127cHi all.
Hi from sanjay at Leh
So I am trying to provide some basic information for Indiamikers to clear the mind confusion of this road trip to Leh.

1.It was raining on the road up to Rohtang Pass on 17th but at present its sunny and beautiful.
2.The distance of this magnificient mountain road is 475 KMs to be covered with One night hault atleast.Dont agree if your taxi driver asks you to rush up in 18 hours drive straight. It will make your trip spoiled and make u cramp. So also you miss a grandeur views of this distance trip.
3.The best of my idea is to make the night stay at Jispa after crossing the Rohtang Pass.Jispa is 147 Kms from Manali and around 30 kms from Keylong( a small town where HPTRC buses makes the night hault. At Jispa you have nice warm tents and small guest houses starting Rs.100 on wards.
4.Sarchu falls in the middle of Manali-Leh road( 222 Kms from Manali). It has nothing except good camping retreats and military base in this windy cold desert. The popular tent retreats are BLUE POOPY and ANTREK.
5.From sarchu you have to cross another Peak range of Lachalang La(5.006Mts) and its 276 Kms from Manali.
6.Then comes Pang.More and Debring. A vast plain desert on the top of the world.
7.Now get ready to face the natures challenge to cross the ThanglangLa (5.360mts).This peak may create alltitude sickness.
So carry sufficient water with electoral powder and avoid stomach full food. The feeling on this peak may not be good but the visionary pleasure is a lifelong exprience. Its absolute no mans land but a small shop in front of the peak temple sells food(incredible India!!!! yeh!)
8.Then down comes Upshi, a small town where you can check ur vehicle and full ur stomach to bring back your smiule upto Leh.Foods served in the tibetian stalls are mouth watering.
9.50 kms from here you reach....Leh..ahhh.The ultimate heaven for bulletriders and adventureres.

Notes:
1.By ordinary HPTRC bus:Rs545 per person.
2.The sharing jeep Rs.1500 per person for front seat and Rs.1200 for back seats.
My suggestion is to try the bus to go up and come down by Jeep.
The drivers of these bus are awarded for discipline driving and I bet they are the best of mountain drivers in India.
3.there are enough internet cafes to keep in touch.

Coming soon my exprience and pictures of Leh.

Happy journey.
miles of smiles.
sanjay
Opps I wanted to post few pictures but my file sizes are bigger than IM s design.sorry.

Your tips are great, though I think the bus fare is more than Rs545 per person; as HPTDC has just sent me this quotation: Rs.1600 per seat which includes bus fare, night stay in tented accommodation at Keylong, dinner and breakfast

Very correct. The difference is that you pay for accomodation in tented retreat+breakfast+dinner..it sounds ok.And the diference is that HPTDC is tourist developement corporation and the bus I took is HPTRC is road transport corporation. So they may be chargeing extra..but if u want my suggestion Rs1600 all inclusive sounds even good.Keylong is a nice junction where u can take a break too or escape to SPITI valley..the landcape is gr8 all around.

Kingdom in sky

If I use words to describe the serenity of Ladakh and grandeur of its mountains and lakes and rivers----perhaps I have to learn again to justify my language of expression.Better is that I mention the people and faces at Leh.
If you reach Leh by bus..almost evening, chances are there Mr Tenzing will apeear to you.A strong bulit, tall, pony tailed tibetian.A born mountaineer. He will offer you his guesthouse on bargain rates and promises to arrnge permits and other necesities to see around.Unlike the tauts and cheats of other indian city bus stands..Tenzing is as honest as his words.I put my trust on this guy and he offered me a free pick up to his spacious guest house..Zar La.(most of the names of places are having a LA end of it...may be La means the Last in Ladakh)
Amazing beauty and slow pace town is Leh.If there is a sound,it may be of a jet or a bulletrider.Leh seems to be the Mecca of adventurers.Everyone lands here heads for mountains and lakes and cold dry deserts high in the sky.Seems tourists come here for a real time relaxation and adreline exprience.
Khardung La 50 kms from Leh is the highest motorable road on the top of the world challenges the bikers and it seems the bikers accept the challenge as I did too( rented one).
So what you see is variety of loaded.ready to face challenge BULLETRIDERS arriving in Leh.( yes life without this adventure is food without salt my dear)

I also noticed that it also attracts writers, lensmen, geologists and students of geography from different parts of globe to experiment the diversity in this skykingdom.
so far Bullets rule the roads of Leh.

The tip is that:
The oxygen level is low here so go slow in pace.try to get along to high alltitude for atleast 24 hours.eat more and more.stay healty to enjoy Leh.
to be continued.

Even last year state transport bus cost 545 rupees (just the fare) but a taxi seat on shared basis was 1100. So that has gone up slightly.

Rangers, I guess you will be uploading tons of more pictures?

Hi,

La actually means Pass - Khardung La, Baralacha La, Tanglang La etc. Has come to Mountain Pass.

And Khardung La is not the highest motorable road :-)
