Local Leh Sightseeing

Hi Guys

1) Is it possible to visit Shey, Thikse and Hemis by noon and still have time to visit places around Leh like Santi stupa, shankar Gompa and Leh Palace without rushing things ?

2) Is it possible to visit places around Leh like Santi stupa, shankar Gompa and Leh Palace without rushing things after a Rafting trip between Phey to Nimo ?

Thanks

Hemis, Thicksey,Shey Palace and Sindhu Riverside, can be done in one day you can also do Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace (both on the other side of town)

All these can be done in one day, depending upon the time you spend there. If you want to really sit down and soak around the monastires then it will take more time.

For rafting I will suggest you leave aside one full day.

Thanks MonkeyBoy4u

we just plan to spend sometime in a quieter Monastery like say Shey or ThiKse....say couple of hours at the most

Guess we will give Hemis a miss...I have heard it has become a toursit haunt now a days rather than a spritual monastery

The journey to Hemis is exciting, maybe you can just go and visit.

Thicksey has beautiful views from the top. Thicksey closes for one hour, I guess 1 PM to 2 PM.Thicksey has two restaurants right outside the monastery.

Sindhu riverside and Shey Palace are very nearby and can be done under 2 hours.

Nimmu, confluence of Indus and Zanskar is a must see. There are other places you can see enroute if you are travelling between Leh and Nimmu by road.

If you want i can make you an itinerary :-)

Why do you want to rush things so much? I would keep aside one day for the rafting and one day for the monasteries and one day for the Leh local sight seeing.

Cheers,
Aadil.

MonkeyBoy4u, can you help me with my itinerary?

I am flying to Leh tomorrow, planning to take it easy and rest a bit before the festivities for Buddha Purnima on the 7th, and then I have a Vipassana course until 21st June. After that, I am planning to stay in the region for 3-4 weeks more - focus is on spiritual places and mild trekking (sadly do not have all necessary equipment with me this time).

I was thinking about using Leh as a base and going for those one-day tours in Ladakh - is there a support system for this? Would it be possible to connect to other travellers on the road? Where is the best place to find IM-like beings irl*?

Thank you!

Sorry for the late reply.Been working long hours at office.

Here is an itinerary for you

June 4th - Fly to Leh and checkin to Hotel. Drinks lots and lots of water. Rest and just soak in the surroundings.

June 5th - Walk around Leh, Leh Bazaar and Shanti Stupa. If you are having problems acclimitising, move Leh Bazaar and Shanti Stupa to the 6th.

June 6th - explore Leh (by foot if possible) go visit the restaurants and maybe hang around the main bazaar.Leh Army musuem can also be visited.

June 7th - Take part in the Buddha Purnima celebrations. (I am presuming this is on the banks of the Sindhu [Indus])

Till June 21 - Attend Vipassana course (After this you still have 3-4 weeks)

June 22 - Hemis Monastery.

June 23 - Thicksey Monastery and Shey Palace

June 24 - Alchi Monastery.

June 25 - Lamayuru Monastery.

June 26 - On the way back you can stay at Alchi, or head back to Leh. Visit the confluence of Indus and Zanskar at Nimmu. Magnetic Hill and Gurudwara Shree Patthar Sahab can also be done.

June 27 - Rest

June 28 - Pangong Tso via Chang La (night stay at Pangong Tso)

June 29 - Return to Leh

June 30 - Nubra Valley via Khardung La

July 1 - Nubra Valley. Must see villages Hunder and Diksit.

July 2 - Return to Leh

You can also visit Tso Moriri but I am not sure how many days it will take from Leh. You can do a lot in 3 to 4 weeks. You can also start travelling downwards to Manali and the Spiti Valley.

If you are interested in Buddhism you can visit the Spiti Valley, Kaza,Tabo have old and famous monastries.

I hope you have a good flight to Leh, forgot to mention that you require a permit to visit most of the places. The hotel guys will arrange it for you, make sure you ask the moment you check in. Feel free to ask any questions here carry some sort of id proof like passport

Nice one Monkey Boy

Tsomoriri can be done either in a Day or Two day trip ..however most people need to acclimatize before making this trip due to the altitude

Monkey Boy thanks for the offer however our itinerary is already packed.... secondly we are in such a rush because we don't have much time...so we are trying to see where all we can save time
