Life is elsewhere

Continuing its Sunday preoccupation with Ladakh, the Lucknow edition of the Hindustan Times yesterday carried a feature on the Chang-pa nomadic people of Changthang, which, I thought, may interest others here. It mentions the work of a French couple who have been working with the Chang-pas. They say that every year five out of the 100 existing Chang-pa families move out of the tribe to a more mainstream way of life. The full article, titled "Life is elsewhere," is available at Yahoo India News, http://in.news.yahoo.com/070908/32/6ki59.html

There also seems to be an interesting documentary called `Riding Solo To The Top Of The World,' directed by Gaurav Jani, describing his solitary motorcycle journey to Changthang.

Raghu.

Very interesting. Had missed the earlier thread, too.

Thanks.

Raghu.
About a fortnight back, there was an article in MUMBAI MIRROR on the solo motorcycle journey by Gaurav Jani to Ladakh. I am not able to get a hand on it.

By the way, Gaurav Jani appears to me to be a IM member . Pl see the thread at http://www.indiamike.com/india/himac...dmandi-t43056/

It does seem to be a fascinating film, and its Web site says that it has won several awards. There is a review of the film, titled `Motorcycle Chang-pa', in the Sunday magazine of The Hindu, 19 February, 2006.

Thanks for that reference. I wonder if you mean Jaykumar Jadeja, who was one of the posters in that thread; he appears to have travelled to Changthang on a motorcycle, and has put up nice photographs of the trip on one of his Web sites. (Just in case someone wants to follow the link in your posting to that thread, I have taken the liberty of removing a typo in the URL --- the dot between f and 29; so the thread is actually Around Dharamsala, Hamirpur, Kangra and Mandi.)

Thanks for correction.

Yes. I seem to have got confused when I followed the link mentioned by jay_j http://www.60kph.com where Gaurav Jani's name has been mentioned as director of the documentary film.
