Unfortunately I cannot say the buses are reliable enough.
It is India. Things tend to happen and it is an area were roads are sometimes blocked after rains (yes - rains do occur in Ladakh), landslides, etc. I cannot really help you with trek tips so I hope you know what you're doing (for your sake, please don't trek alone and without guidance unless you know exactly what you're doing). I do not remember if buses between Manali and Leh actually stop in Rumtse. I took the bus but I'm not sure about its halts. If it is on the highway then many buses and jeeps are passing it during the summer, unfortunately they tend to be full. Going with a small group and a guide will be safer and you won't have to deal with the difficult doubts. I visited the lakes (Kar, Morriri, Pangong) in 2 trips with a jeep and it was fabulous. we've stopped on the way many times to watch wildlife and landscapes and we spent a lot of time in the lakes. |

Well, honestly I think I will trek alone, unless I can find someone to join. I've been trekking in Ladakh before (Lamayuru->Darcha), also in some other places, so I know what I can expect more or less. By the way, there are two more questions coming to my mind...
How much eariler should I try to buy the ticket for Leh->Manali bus departure? The same knowledge would be very helpful in case of Manali->Delhi departures... Do you think it is not a big problem to find a trekking group to join in August or early September? Thanks again! ![]() |

I suggest you will buy the ticket 1-3 days prior to departure to ensure you will not encounter any surprises. The Manali-Delhi route is less limited I believe you can buy the ticket one days prior to departure.
I did not trekked in Ladakh, so I'm not certain about arranging a group for trekking. When me and my friend wanted to arrange a group for a jeep we did it easily simply by asking people in central leh area if they wanted to join us... You have this option, you can also ask agencies in central leh about emerging groups and you can also try to use this site (: |

I have done leh Tsomoriri last year on bike..trek on that route would be lot of fun..150 kms from leh is the village of Chumathung..it is famous for its hot water springs..you can stop over for a day or two at that place..it has a very well equipped guesthouse at very affordable rates. I am planning to visit ladakh again this august..I would have loved to trek with you but my time is pretty limited..I may again look for a bike trip..May be to Drog pa circuit this time..As of Leh Delhi Flights ..u can find plenty..for best rates apply a month or so in advance
