Leh-Tso Moriri Trip Details Required

Is it possible to visit Shey/Stok/Thiksey/Hemis and reach Upsi/Sumdo for overnight halt? What are the accomodation facilities at Upsi / Sumdo or other place on route to Tso moriri?

How is the road from Leh-Tso Moriri (Leh-Upsi-Sumdo-Chumathang-Tso moriri-Korzok)? Is it doable on Pulsars, that we shall hire from Leh?

Why not stay at hemis

There will be lots of camping sites at Hemis for overnight stay.

Can you elaborate what your plans are, why do u want to halt at Upshi/Sumdo.

Me and my friends don't have too much of experience of travelling at this height. So we shall visit all monasteries till hemis and then head for upshi/sumdo for overnight halt so that next day when we go for Tsomoriri we have to cut lesser distance.

Make sure you stay two nights in Leh for acclimitization before setting out. It's a good idea to spend the night in Upsi. You should also stop at Tso Kar and wander around a little bit if you have time.

Wink accomodation options tso moriri :?

because we will be going to ladakh in mid oct...

are there any good non-camping options for an overnight stay for two of us near tso moriri... and since we'll likely have a guide taking us from leh, how does overnight accom work in that instance?
fanks in advance!

ps. i trust, as it is written in various threads here, that it won't be a problem to get tso moriri permits for only two of us once we arrive in leh 48h or so before planning to go to tso moriri?

There is a Tso Moriri resort but it is expensive, other option is to stay in one of the numerous guesthouses run from home. But the problem with them is that they have Ladakhi style toilet which not every one likes.

a night in a ladakhi house in karzok costs about rs.300 including meals. accommodation is also possible in a dormitory tent for rs.100 per bed. conditions in karzok are basic indeed but almost anybody could take it for just a day or two and Tso Morriri worth it easily...

they are not very different from indian toilets - its just a hole in the floor...
its nothing to fear from (unless disabled). it can always be remembered as an adventurous and exciting experience

But they generally stink pretty bad as the shit just goes into a room below and gets covered by the sand you are supposed to shove down that hole.

Ladakhi/Tibetan style toilets are a great invention , and the well managed ones are nearly odorless. This depends on the guests adding enough amount of earth in the right place , and the composition of it : in the really neat places ashes have been added. They are whenever possible located on the second floor or higher , on the northern , cold side. The end product is freeze dried manure that fuels the rich fields and greenhouses.
For some reason the Ladakhi toilets seem to be better managed than the Tibetan ones , the Potala was a sorry affair making people wince way off when the wind turned towards the face of the building.

Water toilets are Evil , the reason why water in Leh nowadays gets contaminated and people get sick.

Thanks for enlightening me
But I would rather try to avoid it, Dont want to risk my morning with a room thats not properly managed by previous visitors.
Interesting to know the entire structure and end product, innovative.

Is there any chance to travel from Tso Moriri to Leh by bus? If yes, how often does it depart?
I would like to trek to TsoMoriri and I am thinking about options for getting back to Leh...

Thanks in advance for information,

The bus line between Leh and Tso Morriri is rather limited.
2 years ago, when I have visited the area, it was once every 10 days (!). But since you want to walk one way, you can try to plan carefully so you will finish the trek synchronized with the day the bus is passing there.

You can ask for updated bus schedule in the official tourist center in Leh.

Good luck!

Thank you Itamar for the answer.

Do you think that buses are reliable enough and I can trust their schedule?

I am thinking, if it was a better idea, to make it other way around: first go to Tso Moriri by bus, and then trek via Tso Kar to Rumtse... Do you think I will be able to organise transport from Rumtse to Manali? I know this is the famous Leh highway, so I guess some buses stop there and collect more passaners.

Many thanks again,
