LEH - Sep 25

Hi,

I need few suggestion about the iternary and guest house feedback.

1) Climate during Sep 25 - Oct 4??

2) Dorje Guest House Feedback?? or any other guest house??

3) Clothing ?? (I stay in bangalore where avg temp is around
18-35 degree Centigrade)
So please suggest what kind of clothing to carry....

Initial plan

Sep 25: Reach Kullu via flight
Start journey towards LEH
Night halt @ Keylong
Sep 26: If possible, Day trip to Chandratal or continue
towards LEH. Night halt @ Keylong (Chandratal) or LEH
Is Chandratal worth a visit during this time (Day trip)??
Sep 27: LEH sight seeing
Sep 28/29: Nubra Valley
Sep 30/1 : Pansong Lake
Oct 2/3 : Tsomori lake
Oct 4 : Leave for Delhi

Any suggestion about the iternary and any other good places that should not be missed...

Imtiaz, it more depends on the mode of travel from manali to Leh. You seem to be pretty flexible with time, so chandratal is not a place to miss.

Hi Imtiaz,

We would be travelling from Manali towards Leh on the 27th of Sept. How are you planning to travel?

We are also looking for people with whom we could travel either from Manali to Leh or we can catch up in Leh..

Can u pm me your mail id.. it would be easier to communicate..

Regards,

Som...

Vistet suggests as much as 20 in the day with night quite chilly close to zero. Just ideal for Vistet but I would like to have either a warm blanket, honey, or heater at night. Individual preferances may vary..

Hi imtiaz,

My answers as listed below

1) Climate during Sep 25 - Oct 4?? ] ---- Depends on which part of Ladhak are you planning to roam ( In places like Leh it would be manageable cold (defination of this can vary from people to people) and sunny in day time ( in figures between 0 degrees to 20-25 degrees )

2) Dorje Guest House Feedback?? or any other guest house??
I usually stay at Oriental - has rooms in all ranges -away from main market therefore is a bit quite - Anyways you have plenty of options in Leh.

3) Clothing ?? (I stay in Bangalore where avg temp is around
18-35 degree Centigrade)

Essential requirements

1) good set of thermals
2) couple of sweaters
3) Good jacket (ideally water proof)
4) Scarf if needed
5) warm head cap
6) Gloves (woollen )
7) Good pair of sunglasses
8) sunblock
9) a pair or two of woolen socks

plus essential medicines (better to keep couple of tablets of Diamox - incase of any emergencies)

other clothing as required

Here is my analysis of your plan

Initial plan

Sep 25: Reach Kullu via flight ( you need to have a buffer here - these flights are unpredicable)
Start journey towards LEH (provided you reach Kullu by 10 am it takes another 3 hours approx to reach Manali - It would be 3 pm by the time you have lunch and strike up a taxi deal for keylong - ideally you will have to strike the complete deal upto Leh - chances of getting a cab to Leh from keylong is bleak.

Night halt @ Keylong

Sep 26: If possible, Day trip to Chandratal or continue
towards LEH. Night halt @ Keylong (Chandratal) or LEH
Is Chandratal worth a visit during this time (Day trip)??

( Bad idea since in technical terms your taxi guy is charging you for all these hours)

also it will be a stretch to reach Leh from Keylong unless you start early morning at say 4am or something- else better take one more night halt at Pang - you wont be able to enjoy the trip otherwise ( remember this will cost you more taxi fare wise)

My advise

Sep 25th - Night halt at Manali get used to the higher climate when compared to Bangalore - also use this time to bragain for a better taxi deal

Sep 26th - 5am start for Leh ( Manali - Sarchu/Pang strech)

Sep 27th Sarchu/Pang - Leh

So in a sense its better to spend the first day in Manali and then start from Manali early morning say by 4.30 am so as to beat the Rohthang traffic jam take a night halt at sarchu or advisably Pang if you can make it there ( Sarchu stop can take a toll on the body - climate wise last and altitude wise time I spent my night there it fell to -2 in the night and not to mention the cold winds - the water pipes frooze in the morning hahaha) pang is better in these two formats however not as clean as sarchu

From Pang you can reach Leh in time to search and book hotels/guest house

Sep 28: Local LEH sight seeing ----- night halt Leh
Sep 29/30: Nubra Valley take a night halt there or it will be too rushed up for you to enjoy the scene --------- Night Halt Hunder / Deksit
Oct 1 : Pansong Lake and back ----- night halt Leh
ideally after visiting Pangong Tso you wont feel too keen to visit Tso Moriri since boating and on shore stay is not allowed.
However if you stilll feel like it

Oct 2 : Cannon ball Run to Tso Moriri and back or night stay at karzok
Oct 3/4 : catch flight / Taxi to Delhi ( incase you dont go to Tso moriri you will have a day or two of buffer time for eventualities)

Ps: Note that your ability to take calls on timeframe \halts would be seriously limited if you take a share taxi - if you take a complete taxi you will have more control though at higher cost.

All the best

I´m struggling with this sentence , that seems like a logical trap : it´s quite chilly , and at the same time you have water flowing over the ground..
seems like a paradox . (Today : 24 to 2 degrees ) .

Honeys are always nice , but that remains an unplannable part of our lives.

Buses do this stretch in a long day , you´ll do better in a jeep. Unforeseen events can turn this in to a two day trip , regardless what vehicle you use.

Acclimatization starts very slowly with nights over 2000 meters , and most parts of Manali are below that. Try spending the night in Vashisht , but don´t expect any major advantages from a single night there.

Pang is higher than Sarchu (4510 vs. 4253 ) , and already Sarchu is beyond what you should try for. You can see how it turned out for me last time in my blog : my main point here would not be that one person needed help from the Army medic , but that the majority of the single nighters from Keylong missed out on a lot of what happened the next day.The first part of the experience is to actually stay awake.

It is a lot colder thousand meters higher than Leh , we had frost in the morning already in in late July. Cold also impacts more when you are unacclimatized , you will have poor circulation in hands, feet & the exposed head. Start with covering these for your highest coldest nights. First get a thin balaclava , the only thing that covers both the head and the neck/throat effectively , and stays on at night.

Yes offcourse - somehow Pang appears at a lesser height than Sarchu, I guess probably because its kind of closed with the mountains around; and at the same time Sarchu is more on open landscape especially where you have the so called Luxury camps - Sarchu camps are more exposed to cold winds and all - having said that I never liked the Pang camp that much compared to the openness of Sarchu
