Leh, Ladakh via Manali in June End/July Start

Hi Rushir.. How was ur trip ? Please lemme know the details. Were u able to enjoy the road on the shared taxi or u feel that u could have taken some more people and acquired a private sumo. Actually I love photography and we often choose any place in the middle of the road and sit there for hours. So I dnt think shared taxi is the deal for us.

Ravinder as per ur suggestion i have increased the time for the trip ... but i would like to c places near srinagar as well ofcouse if time permits. Now I am leaving 12th August by volvo to Manali and leaving Srinagar on 22nd by flight to Delhi.

can u advise me as well for leh,we have a very limited time will be reaching leh by flight on 25 th june,would want some info on where to travel,what kind of permits required,passport?? we'll be returning on 30 th june by flight...so intotal 5 days

Hi! This is shammi. I have been to leh via manalilast to last year. I had a great experience of travelling. If you are looking to go to leh via shared sumo than it will leave manali at 4.00 am in the morning & reach leh at 6 pm evening. But you won't be able to catch the natural beauty at many places which are awasome. So if you can make your group a bit larger in size than may be you 'll be able to enjoy the natural beauty. baralacha, lallacha, pang, sarchu, & tangla pass is a great areas to capture. & we back to Delhi via kargil, drass, srinagar, jammu . It's a lifetime experience i had while travelling. This time in the first week of june i am planning to visit shimla, sangla valley, Kaza, Kibber, Kunzum pass, chandertal, Rohtang, Manali back to delhi. We are only few people but interested if two or three adventurous people like to make a memorable lifetime experience with us. I live in Delhi. Bye! since I'm Planning to travel to leh-ladakh with our own vehicle,ie suzuki vitara,what would you advice.
The route from manali-rohtang pass-keylong-sarchu(stay overnight)-pang-upshi-leh-nubra-pangongtso-tso moriri-tso kar-pang-sarchu-keylong-rohtang pass-Manali is good or visiting tso kar-tso moriri-pangong tso-nubra-leh would be better.since we are travelling by road in our own veh,advice us where to stay,how early to start,how about outdoor camping with our own tents,cooking outside,best places for photography.
There's a small hitch,we plan to travel manali -leh in second or third week of april,how about this?what may be the kickbacks.
They mention about permits,where are they required,where to get them issued,how much does permit cost for the entire journey from Manali-Leh-Manali.
you have mentioned u were travelling for a documentry,how did it go,if so let me watch it too,guide me.thanks

Instaed of coming back to manali from leh,is it advisable to go to shimla from leh.please advise.how was ur trip please post some photos.

I dont think rohtang pass(and other high passes) will be open by 2nd or third week of April. They usually open in May.

If these passes are not open you cannot take a land route the leh via manali.

You can’t directly go from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso, though you can do Wari La and come near Chang La and do Pangong Tso - Chushul - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar. Though that would require plenty of spare fuel and okness with tackling some really rough routes and forgoing comforts for adventure.

You can do outdoor camping, just don’t do it at Pangong Tso, Sarchu and Pang as they are really cold and windy places. Last year couple of my friends put up their own tent near Sarchu and were almost frozen at night! For rest, check out Ladakh Travel Guide which I wrote.

In April I am not even sure if the Srinagar route would be open, Manali-Leh you can forget till the middle of May.

You need permits for Nubra Valley (including Khardung La), Pangong Tso, Marsimik La, Chusul/Hanle, Tso Moriri and Dah-Hanu as they fall under restricted areas. Permits are issued from DC’s office in Leh (next to polo ground) and while applying, you need to specify which all places you are visiting, number of days for which you need the permit, identity of people traveling along with a copy of an identity card (passport, driving license etc.) proving it. As for the fee, it keeps changing but it is usually around Rs.10-20 per person, per day and goes to the wildlife fund.

Shimla I wouldn’t really recommend, it is just a concrete jungle. Better spend those days in Ladakh itself. Though if you still wish to go there, you can either take the slightly tough and fun route through Spiti or one of the three routes from Mandi to Shimla.

how was the weather there in Leh during your last visit, as i am planning my trip during this June (first week), during the sindhu darshan festival.
any chance of snowfall in higher region like khardoong la.

I visited last yr and u should go for it as its an amazing place
1) Should hired a sumo for 10-12k for 2 days from Manali to Leh coz in 1 day u cant enjoy. Max capacity is 7 in sumo. Do not go for bus coz bus will go non stop and within 14 hours u will reach Leh without enjoying at max but u will def face the problem to find other 5 members who can share with u
2) plz stay the whole day at pangong TSO as this lake changes its color
3) should go for Numbra valley as well as Hemis Gompa
4) stay near by Shanti stoopa @ max Rs 300 per day

I doubt you can find a bus that makes it to Leh within 14 hours , that´s a very good time with a car. HPTDC buses stop overnight in Keylong , last time I went with a private bus we stopped for the night in Darcha.
