hi we are planning to go to leh ladakh around june end. have a couple of questions:
1. how many days do u think are required for the trip including acclimatization excluding travel since we would be flying down. 2. good places to stay. since we would be travelling with 4 kids so comfort is very important! 3. what all to visit? thanks a ton in advance. |

take a look at my triplog for ladakh for august 2007.
August 2007 trip to ladakh - long delayed triplog 1. we flew down from delhi and spent 8 days in ladakh. 2. we stayed in a hotel called cho palace. I can recommend it. There are broadly 2 kinds of accomodation in ladakh. the guest houses(Rs 300 to 500) and hotels(around Rs 1200 to 1400). Mod Note : Moved thread to Ladakh and Zanskar forum |

I have seen those camps. I decided to do all the night stays in leh because I want to come back to a comfortable room/hot shower at the end of a long day of travelling/sight seeing.
Those camps did not seem very comfortable to me. |

I had visited leh in the month of August 2008 and liked the plcae very much. First day of reaching at leh is required to stay at hotel and take complete rest if you are going by air.
I have again planned to visit leh with my family. We will be flying from Delhi on 29th August 2009 and will be comming back on 4th June 2009 flight by Indian Air lines flight. I donot know your dates and we can higher a sumo jointly for going to the places that will save lot of cost because Taxis are very costly in Leh. |

would recommend longer acclimatisation. (check websites like Himalayan Rescue association for the medical side) - I spend the first 2 days there wheezing and doing nothing. never go higher than leh for the first 2 and preferably 3 nights after arrival. Pangong is 4000+ meters if i remember right. You will need to watch the kids' fluid intake, especially if they are young.
Sorry if this sounds like a lecture but I have seen sevreal people's holidays ruined by someone's difficulty with altitude. on the other hand most people are fine and it really is a beautiful as they say! have a great time Bruce |

best is to go by road as you can c many places onway from srinagar to leh and you get acclamatised also like you can c places sonamarg/drass(view of tiger hill)/kargil/mulbeck(stone carved buddha very old/alchi monastry/likker monastry/magnetic hill( vehicle moves up the hill while in neutral gear)/ pathar sahib gurudwara(back impression of guru nanak on a big rock)

June/july is a good time to visit Ladakh. Though there may be too many tourists. With kids i would advise that you stay in a hotel in Leh and guest houses/hotels in other parts of ladakh. I stayed at Hotel Mandala in Leh (hospitality at its best, they even accompanied me to the local hospital cos i needed medicines for AMS). I stayed at a camp on the banks of the Zanskar. It was freezing (i was there in the last week of may). Camps are avoidable expecially if you have kids around. Even with two sleeping bags I was shivering. But the guest houses and hotels in even very remote areas are quite comfortable.

hi... last year a friend and i took the kargil route and did one of those cannonball runs - 18 hours(or more??), no stopover...but i'm glad to say we didn't have much of a AMS problem...possibly because the kargil route is more gradual as compared to manali...the next day i even climbed up spituk while my friend rested for 24 hours...when i got breathless half way to the top i realised i was being too reckless...so do rest a day or two.. if you're going by road a 24 hours should be enough, but then, i'm no expert
about hotels...the sumo we were travelling in gave hazaar trouble around lamayuru with the result that we reached leh at the ungodly hour of 1 am...we'd booked a room in advance at the old ladakh guest house and the old man who runs the place, akbar, very kindly sent someone to fetch us from fort road. That - getting lost at 1 am with a cranky vehicle and crankier driver at the end of a bone crunching journey - was the worst ordeal we faced ont eh ladakh trip. The next morning we actually saw the guest house - it was a charming family run establishment with pretty plants and nice courtyard - our room had an attached terrace and cost Rs. 500. We realised we were in the most expensive room and promptly moved to a Rs. 200 room downstairs with a 'shared' bathroom - no terrace but a magnificent view of the Namgyal Tsemo instead. There were also rooms with attached bath for as little as Rs.250. After a couple of days we realised that the there were many options in the 100-300 range available in the mpore secluded Changspa area, not too far away from the centre of town. We considered moving there, but the family at Old Ladakh was really nice and the kids adorable, so finally stayed put till the end of our stay. I highly recommend it, especially if you're travelling with family..the only hitch is that there's no attached restaurant, but there're enough eating options on fort road and changspa. best, k |

The Srinagar-Leh allnighter is dramatically different from the Manali-Leh cannonball run : it´s way lower. The highest pass is lower than the Moray Plains , the second highest is four hundred meters lower than the Rothang , which you cross within hours of leaving Manali. The main factor here remains sleeping altitude ; it´s a farly even toss between doing the allnighter from Srinagar and flying in.
