As you are going to leh by flight you will have to rest(complete rest in your hotel) for at least 1 day(to acclimatize against AMS) before you start any activity.

your time is too short. try to increase atleast 1-2 days more. If 4 days is all you can manage then my suggestion would be

1. reach 5th morning - rest all day and ask your hotel to get your permit for pangong and kardungla/nubra.
2. 6th - A day trip to lamayuru with a visit to alchi and likir on the way. The road to lamayuru is not as mountanous as other roads in ladakh. so its a good choice for your first day trip.

3. 7th - Day trip to pangong

4. 8th - day trip to nubra(via khardungla)

this will be extremely hectic though.

the 8th will be less hectic if you go till khardungla only instead of nubra.

with your very limited time you donot have time to go to pangong and do a night stay in nubra.

thanks a lot will keep this in mind.

Can you please tell me which will be the best guesthouse to stay in Leh (economical and clean) around fort road?

What's the approx fare for trips to Nubra and Pangong?

there are a bunch of hotel recommendations for leh in the hotel section of this website. have a look.

we stayed in hotel cho palace about 1 km from the leh market(a little after the zorawar singh fort). It was 1200 for a double bed room per night. but I donot know if it will be open in april as most hotels and guest houses are open for the tourist season only - may to october.

you can go through my trip report for details/cost of pangong etc trips

August 2007 trip to ladakh - long delayed triplog

I don't think I will have problem with Aclamatization, but worried about my wife as she had a tough time at Nathula Border in Sikkim last year but that was in January.

I've already booked the flight tickets as i got them very cheap.

Very difficult to predict whether you will have problems or not. It doesnot depend on physical fitness and cannot be predicted from past experience. ie may be you didnot have problem during an earlier trip but you may still have problem during this trip.

Please take care otherwise it will spoil what could be an unforgettable trip for the two of you

I donot know if altitude sickness depends on temperature. I went in august and had slight headaches for the first day. for the first 2-4 days every morning I would have a slight headache for 20-30 mins after I woke up from sleep. for 2-3 night I had a slight sense of breadthlessness during the nights.

I donot know what physical discomfort(if any)my husband felt.

A few tips for your wife from my personal experience

1. Absolutely no strenous activity on the first day. drive straight to the hotel from the airport. spend the rest of the day lazing in the room or the terrace looking at the views around and sipping fruit juice or mint tea.

2. donot feel unduely anxious at the feelings of heaviness in the head or slight breathlessness.

3. get up from the bed in the morning even when you have the headache. the headache will not go if you continue lying. it will slowly disappearonce you are up and about and have eaten a light breakfast.

wishing you both a wonderful holiday.
(I am so jealous of anyone going on a ladakh trip )

Myself and my friend are planning to visit Leh via, Jammu Srinagar, Kargil by motorcyle(in one bike - bike from Jammu) during the period 10th may to 20th May 09. How will be the road conditions from Jammu to Leh. After Leh we decide to go to Manali via Sarchu, Keylan & Rohtanpass. How will be the road after Leh and upto Manali during 15th of May 09. People are warning us about to Tanglang La & Baralachala. Last year in May(15th) we were about to reach Leh via Manali but people residing after Rogtang pass (exact place is Kuksar) told us there were heavy ice on Baralacha La that time and hence it was no advisable to go by that time. How about this time? Will the road be conducive and how about the ice on the road of Baralacha La and other high peaks on the road to Jammu to Manali vis Leh. Is there any possibility to go to Amarnath in our trip (by May 13th to 18th)? Please advice me.

No one can tell how you will react on arriving in Leh , I cant even be sure how I will react next time.My own take on this is that the highest stuff comes last , I try to remain at Lehs altitude the first three nights which is when a lot of the basic acclimatization takes place. Some people feel rotten the first nights : consider moving down to Alchi , four hundred meters lower than Leh if you find yourself in this situation. With an earlier altitude sickness event (at a lower altitude than Pangong Tso) Id feel a lot better about setting out for the highest points after more acclimatization.Probably not a safety issue , definitely a comfort issue.

Cold doesnt trigger atitude sickness. Acclimatization on the other hand makes cold worse : the body cant afford circulation to anyhing but the vital organs and muscles , so you get white , cold hands and feet.

There are at least guesthouses open all year round , I stayed Dec-Jan many years ago. There is also fuel for heating (but night temperatures are racing towards the freezin point already , just -9 C last night ) but food will be very basic until the road opens : no fruits (I bought the last kilo of apples in late January) , no fresh veggies etc.

Jeeps and buses run all through the year , but no one can guarantee that the higher roads remain open every day or week : see for example the fairly recent even at the Khardung La .

In any case its close to impossible to arrange a short tour to Ladakh with a night stay at Pangong Tso, and remain within safety guidelines : you need three nights in Leh , and one night around 4000 , before going for a night camp at Pangong Tso. Visits are OK , though , its the sleeping altitude that really impacts.
