Passes Khardungla [to the Nubra Valley] and Changla [to Pangong Tso] would have ice and snow.
The best would be to fly in and out of Leh and hire a taxi to take you around. October will have (-) temperatures and riding a bike would be difficult.
I have hired a vehicle from the 7th October till 15 October. PM me if you want more details.
Edit:
I just realized you cannot send a PM. Post here if you need more details.

If planning to leave Manali on 29 September, it will be fine.
Only make sure that you make way for the Raid de Himalayas on these days:
Raid route 2012 Xtreme Category
Leg 1 (7th October) Simla - Manali
Leg 2 (8th October) Manali -Gramphoo-Kaza
Leg 3 (9th October) Kaza-Komic-Hikkim-Lidang-Demul-Sichling-Kaza
Leg 4 (10th October) Kaza - Gramphoo - Pang
Leg 5 (11th October) Pang - Leh
Leg 6 (12th October) Leh - Khardung La - Wari La - Leh
Do not spend the night at Sarchu or Pang, the possibility of AMS is a reality at that altitude - Keylong, Jispa, are better options at relatively lower altitude.
Search the threads on this forum for the dangers posed by AMS, by "Vistet" and others, and the precautions you should take.
Have a nice trip.

Hi amitkatiyar,
We had a trip to ladakh in last August and we traversed Manali-Leh highway while returning. Few cents from my side:
1. Manali-leh highway is beautiful but there is very high chance of AMS if you go through this road at starting of your journey to Leh.
as per suggestions from many Ladakh-gurus in IM, we started from Srinagar then stayed at kargil for one night then went to Leh. While returning, we took Manali-Leh highway.
2. You can refer this website(very helpful and informative) : http://devilonwheels.com/
The taxi fare of all routes are very much standard and can be found in this site.
You can contact any travel agent to book for a full trip, selecting the places you want to go. Else, can book cab leh-to-leh covering places you want to visit.
But, if you can contact some driver directly, that will be economical. They give 10-12% discount on standard price.
3. Another tip(or my own opinion), if possible and you time permitting, plan to stay near pangong lake(Spangmik villege) for one night. Next morning, ask your driver to drive to next 2 villeges( Man and Merak). You can feel Pangong much more.

Thank you Mr.subhadyuti ....do you have any contacts of the cab drivers so that i can directly contact to them...if so it will be a great help ... Chushul is not permitted now, which is a bit far(about 30 min drive from Merak). In Man and Merak, there is no security checkpost and you can easily go there till Merak.
Hi amitkatiyar,
Some phone numbers of Ladakh Drivers:
1. Northen : 09419373021
2. Tashi : 09419873185
3. Regzin (Our Driver) : 09622954779, 09469472772
If they're in some trip, you'll not be able to connect them in daytime(usually). Either call early morning or around evening time.

October will be extremely cold see the forecast for the first two weeks in Leh.Night temp of -6 to -8 in Leh will translate to -10 to -15 at Karzok ... in reality "Real Feel Factor" will be even more colder after you factor in the wind chill.
See this:
http://www.accuweather.com/en/in/leh...onyr=10/1/2012
It was freezing in August last year when I was there and stayed in a GH [tents would have been colder]. This year when I visit during the first week, I was advised against staying overnight at Karzok, and have therefore booked my accommodation at Chumatang, a lot lower in altitude and also a lot warmer with the hot springs a few feet away.
By the way, the tents were available from Rs 2000 - 4500/night during season. Would be less in the off season, if they are still there.
Have a nice trip!

IŽd be surprised. I crossed the Khardung La last time in mid-November , and there was a little patch of ice in the shade north of the pass , hardly exciting. Dry road in all other parts - the mid-day sun very quickly burns away any snow.

A lot more snowfall towards the Manali end : see for example my trip photos at http://korta.nu/bluebag in late October. The road being open every day in October is far from certain : in 2009 Manali-Leh was out three times before mid-September. Plan buffer days , and gear up to deal with the worst case scenario : stuck overnight in subzero temperatures at extreme altitude.
General Manali-Leh pointers here : http://korta.nu/sleepless

Heh heh, Vistet.Weather is so unpredictable these days .... last year mid-September was so hot in Nubra and Zanskar, that I had nose bleeds. It was hotter than the plains of East India! To add to the woes, the Guest Houses did not have fans in the rooms

This year however, is a different issue. Cold weather has set in early, and I am to be there second week of October. Here is the weather forecast for Leh in October. The averages of the past year is also mentioned .... a shot in the arm for the global warming nay-sayers.

Cheers!
